I have a system that is being upgraded and meets the criteria for Microsoft OEM.

The system has windows 98SE now and I want to install windows xp home full version (OEM) over the 98se with out loosing the data and programs installed.

Can I do this or am I going to need to get the windows xp home upgrade?

Thanking you all in advance for your assistance.

Hard to say. Some OEM disks don't allow upgrades.

You won't know until you try.

Thank you for your in-put, but is there anyone who has done this or know the actual answer to the question?

Question being can I use the OEM XP Home to install over win98SE?

Ok, fine, don't accept my answer

Have you even tried it? I'm not talking out of my arse, by the way.

Some OEM CDs do not have certain files needed for an upgrade to be possible.

Additionally, the setupp.ini file has some say in if a CD allows upgrades as well.

Look at my editted information. I've arguably installed XP more than any person on this forum (not bragging, more like complaining ;)). It was a good answer, and the quickest way to find out. I do have experience with this. I wouldn't have posted if I did not.

    No I'm not an expert.

I've had it work, and I've had it fail(not give you the option to upgrade). Depends on the CD.

Good luck, I am stepping out this thread.

The only way to be sure is to get the retail upgrade CD.

Then you can perform either an upgrade or clean install (assuming you have your 98 CD) at any time.

Thank you everyone for your in-put. I found out my answer.... The answer is no. When I speak of OEM, I am speaking of OEM Microsoft...No name brand system disk..

    The answer is NO.

    I do appreciate everyones in-put.

Actually I din't see a point at all. I posted that this is a Microsoft OEM (no second, third party CD) Comes straight from Microsoft, and i define that in my opening of the thread.

The posted question was quite clear.

I went back and looked I see you jump in quite often in support of Adren, and it appears you are a moderator.

It is easy to have over 3k post if adren simply post non informative response,

Just try it and see is not actual informative helpful advice. I am a member of several forums as well and when I think I have actual helpful information I post.

I was strongly urged to come to this forum and give it a shot, but to be rudely responded to in my first post and then have others support his rudeness is kinda strange.

You are mistaken friend. Adryn is one of the best tech support guys here and does not post 'non-informative' responses. He knows what he's talking about, you can rely on what he says, which was entirely accurate in your situation.

    OEM means Original Equipment Manufacturer

Meaning Dell may put a different set of files than eMachines.

Your question did not leave enough information to form an educated response, and now you get huffy. We are one of the best sites on the net, but not with partial information.

An OEM disk is usually only offerred with a new system, or from 3rd party retailers. MS does not sell OEM disks. They sell full install disks, as the full install disk will evaluate what you have installed for hardware and install the correct drivers. Back to the OEM dealer does not have to include 43 video drivers, as they only install one video system and thusly include the 1 driver.

98 to XP is never a clean process, because of NTFS. It MIGHT work, but more than often it is easier to move files to a CD, clean the drive, and patch them back in afterwards.

And you have some of the best here trying to help you. *not including me*

I totally agree with BoardOutOfMyMind. 98 to XP is not easy. I had many problems when i tried it and ended up doing a full install of XP.

And for your comments about Adrynalyne. Well lets just say this. I have been here for a short while and Adrynalyne has helped me out a lot. He really knows what he is talking about, so try and show some respect. :)

    CtrlAltDel,

Do you honestly feel I deserved the abuse you dished out towards me? Do you really think me to have a large post count due to uninformative posts? If so, I formally request the mods to reset my post count, please.

    I was trying to help...

I've had OEM copies of XP allow upgrading in the past. Now, keep in mind not all OEM CDs are created equallly. I've also had some not give the option. I've even had some give the option, then have setup fail at the compatiblity check. I've even had some upgrade, install, then fail to boot into Windows because of SLP activation limitations.

So as you can see, I could not give you a for sure answer. Nobody could, except maybe the people you bought it from.

I guess I am beating a dead horse.

I was under the impression he was talking about an MS OEM disk (as in the sort you get in a paper wallet and thats it, rather than a fancy pantsy box). In which case i think you CAN upgrade with one of those, but i would have to check. But there isnt any point now, you've found the answer for yourself.

Of all the people who submit non-informative posts, Adryn is NOT one of them.
