I found an old laptop in the attic and i turned it on for the first time in 2 years and it booted up fine but had lots of mailware and viruses and so I started to remove some unwanted programs like kazza and aol and stupid stuff like that nothing virus or spyware related yet. After I removed all the programs I had to reboot and bam! Blue screen of death! Boots up perfectly fine in safe mode, tried to run a system restore on it but still nothing, any ideas?

If you do not need the data on the computer, and it is an OEM like HP or Acer, there is a good chance you have a recovery partition that will take it back to a factory state. What is the make and model of the computer?

I dont need all the data but would like to save it since I have like 10,000 songs on the HD.

The laptop is a HP pavilion dv6700 netbook

Do you have access to another computer? Download the programs and create the bootable USB flash drive.

My mistake. I thought you said netbook, which I assumed meant that you do not have a CD/DVD drive. I believe this computer is a laptop and has a CD/DVD drive, correct? If this is the case, you only have to burn the Puppy iso with Imgburn and boot the CD. No need to use a flash drive.

Edit: I would also download an antivirus boot CD to clean up the computer before you transfer the files. Kaspersky is good. Download the iso and burn it with Imgburn also. Then boot and let it scan your computer for malware.

Well, I am going off on a tangent again. I completely forgot to ask you if you tried a system restore in safe mode. You stated safe mode boots fine. Try a system restore and see if that resolves the problem. Sorry.

    Or--

See if you have a crash dump under C:\windows.

It will have a .dmp extension. It could be a memory.dmp or under a minidump directory.

Grab it from safe mode, upload it, nad it can be debugged to try and ascertain the cause.

Because you can get into safe mode, there is no need for Puppy linux to recover your music files. If you have access to an USB external drive, you can transfer the music files.

You could load Dr Web Cure It onto a USB flash drive and do a scan first.

Edit: you could attach the laptop to your PC and transfer the files, but I would be concerned about this method as you say the laptop has malware.

Backing up your music is a priority.

You might also try from F8 (safe mode options) use the Disable Restart on Error option and post the information on the blue screen. The error number and any files referenced might point to what is causing the crash.

I doubt Last Known Good Configuration will work if System Restore didn't but it may be worth a try.

Let me know when you upload the memory dump. I will debug it for you.
