    Hey Guys,
I do a small amount of PC Repair work for friends and my mother has her copy of Vista that she keeps. I borrow it on occasion when I need it, but I was wondering if I could(and it would be legal to) copy the files from her genuine Vista disc and put them on another CD to keep with my various array of OS's? So I don't have to work around going through her to get it.
    Thoughts please.

I always make copies of my OS and put the original away somewhere safe, it is not illigal to make copies of the OS disc, everyone is entitled to a copy of their OS be it original or a copy of the original.

The rule for CD copying has always been, that you can make a copy for your own backup purposes. Just don't sell them. Eh? If you start selling copies, you might have an FBI agent knocking at your door.

It's not the CD that's copyrighted as much as the Lic. Key.
Without a key, the CD is just a piece of plastic.

    Good Luck,

I'm not gonna sell it. Just want my"own copy" if you will.

Then make one. What's the big deal?
Heck, make two or three. What you do in the privacy of your own home is your business, and no one else's. Eh?

    Hi

ASSUMING the copy of Windows Vista is:

    1. An original install disk from Microsoft

    2. Home Premium Edition

The license terms state this, specifically:

    10. BACKUP COPY. You may make one backup copy of the media. You may use it only to reinstall the software.

It implies that the reinstallation is for the computer THAT COPY was originally installed on; however, that isn't specifically stated. It does NOT allow you to make MULTIPLE backup copies, contrary to what The Shadow said (sorry bud).

I've attached the full EULA for MS Windows Vista Home Premium (non-OEM). If you'd like to pull up the EULA for a different Windows version, or any other MSFT product, here's the link:

    http://www.microsoft.com/About/Legal/EN/US/IntellectualProperty/UseTerms/Default.aspx

EDIT: Hope this answers your question. Personally, I think that creating ONE copy of the disk for re-installation purposes (on any computer using that version of Windows with its own valid license key) complies with the MSFT EULA.

My name's not 'Bud' and there's really no reason to be sorry.
Although your whole response was pretty 'Sorry'. Eh?

Now isn't that really splitting hairs?
Is anyone really going to come into your home with a search warrant for Multiple copies of your software. Please! Get real!

You of the licensing police, just try to make life more complicated for the poor guy who's just trying to get along.

Every day, on some forum or another, people who have lost their installation CD are reminded that they can borrow the same version CD from a friend to do a re-install, as long as they use their legal Key.

    I'm done here. I don't do Stupid!

I didn't capitalize "bud", and mentioned your (forum user) name already. It would've sounded silly to say it twice in the same sentence.

For someone correcting my post, immediately using a fragment as a sentence IN your reply doesn't help your case. Also, my response wasn't sorry; it was educated and factual.

The OP asked a question, and I provided a complete answer, with my addition of interpretation. You provided only an opinion/view, with no supporting information.

I doubt it. However, this forum as a whole is all about using legitimately licensed software within the confines of the license. If you disagree with that view and/or want to argue against it, find another forum.

It's about integrity, not about what you can do without getting caught.

Actually, if you'd read my post completely, you'd realize that while using official information, I said that making a copy of the software wouldn't be a problem.

What's that have to do with anything anyone's said in this thread?

Well, I apologize if I've offended you in some fashion. Again, I was simply answering the original question with a real answer. That's what this forum is about -- real answers from people that know and have experience. I refrain from posting when I only have an opinion to offer that won't necessarily help.
