Yeah, read the news earlier! Still debating on home premium or ultimate. Still would love to know what the ultimate extras will entail, besides the rumours. :)

I'm not sure If I want to buy it, because my parents won't, which means I'll have to pay. :(

I'm looking at the Basic package, I don't get it. What's ACTUALLY included? :p

    Well, who knows? Microsoft do.

Having experienced Vista I'd say that ... the Ultimate version is very nice. Aero isn't something I'd splash out to get, it's not THAT great. It's all a bit confusing as to what exactly is included. So far as security goes, it's way better than XP - they're completely re-made the way processes get privileges. It's a lot more unix like. For those with Linux, it's like using sudo. If you're allowed to, you can elevate processes to a new privilege level.

The firewall, to be fair, isn't that much better. I've not poked it all that much (though I will be soon!) so I couldn't say how it has changed really. It's still pretty easy to identify it on a network when it's locked down (in the "Public Place" profile), which is a disadvantage.

Is Aero just the looks of it? If you don't have it (Basic edition) what does it look like?

Aero is the thing that does all the sidebar and alpha blending magic on windows. Without Aero running it *looks* the same, but you don't get real alpha blending or hardware accelerated windows or that nice stuff. But it is supported by more hardware.

I use it to play games with and i have no problems with it, even with the Nvidia beta drivers COD2 runs smoother than on XP.

IMHO, XP has a couple more years of shelf life, I will probably dual boot because I need to test software.

Totally agree, XP as it stands now is fine and their is no major reason to rush out and get Vista if you dont really need it or your hardware is borderline with running it at same speeds as XP would do with your favored software.

Early adopters will get it anyways as many of them also build PCs frequently, so they will have upto date hardware. ( this most likely be me around Dec/Jan as I'm already running it on my laptop with no issues apart from the last set of bugs i reported but they are minor fit and finish issues )

Others will get it and while it will run ok it doesnt run like XP on their machine so they will gripe at this, which is why I would say stick with XP on your PC especially if its over 2 years old and change to Vista if/when your are buying or building a new PC.

MAs advice is great and one I have mentioned a few times in this topic, duel boot or have two PCs one with Vista and one with XP, as Vista will not run all your favoured software/games*, until updates have been issues if at all.

*too many variables to say what will and what wont run.

    I agree....

    I still can't decide which one I want, they're so expensive. :'(

I don't want/need Media Centre, so I think I'll get the Business package, or the Basic package.

I have a question, it says:

Suggested retail price for full package product, $299.00 USD. Suggested upgrade retail price, $199.00 USD.

If I have a Dell XP CD, can I get the upgrade? Also, when I reformatt (I love doing it), will I have to install XP, then use the upgrade CD?

If so, I think it's better just to get the Full Installation package?
