My wife and I have nearly identical computers (Compaq Presarios) with Vista Home Basic on both. Hers has a 3.5ghz processor while mine is a mere 3.0ghz. But mine works all them time and hers is constantly locking up when on line. The only difference I can figure is that hers is the remote computer on our network while mine is hardwired into the LinkSys wireless system. Any thoughts?

You mean she's using wireless and you're not?
I'd say it's a networking issue, either that or she's picked up some form of bug, nothing offensive meant here but I've noticed over the years that lots of problems women have with puters is downloading tons of crap screensavers and wallpapers......most of which come complete with squirmy bugs.
guys problems usually stem from porn lol (just to appease the girls so I don't get shouted at lol)

More details needed, locking up = Needing to power off the pc? or needing to end task on IE?
Locking up online = when she first goes on or after a while or when on specific sites?

The LAN connection goes from my computer into the back of the LinkSys router and then out of the router into the modem. Her computer and my laptop are both wireless.

My wife doesn't download screen savers or wallpaper. About all she does on line is read her e-mail (a Yahoo account--mine is also a Yahoo account) and go to E-Bay. I've run mutiple virus scans, spyware scans, and cleaned her registry over and over, all to no avail. I've updated her video driver and gotten all HP updates as they came available. I updated JAVA with the latest release, with no change. The only MS update I haven't gotten is "Microsoft.NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Family Update." It has failed to install several times, even after I carefully followed the instructions from a Microsoft technician. I'm thinking this might be the problem, but don't know for sure. I e-mailed Microsoft with the saved screenshot and trouble log that they wanted but have not received a reply after 2 days.

When I say "locked up" I mean the mouse won't move, CTRL-ALT-Delete doesn't work etc. No responses at all to any input short of pressing the ON/OFF button for 5 seconds. After shut-down you can re-start and everything is fine until suddenly it isn't fine anymore. I don't know if time on-line is an issue. I haven't asked. I will. From what she's told me this happens ONLY when she's online, but is not site-specific. Oddly, when she's had me look at it, the whole screen has been "faded out," like a button will "gray out" when you can't click on it. Colors are muted, everything is a bit fuzzy. Very strange. I haven't checked to see if the router and DSL modem continue to blink or not when her computer is locked up. Nor have I been online with my computer at the same time. Might be interesting to find that out, eh?

First thing I would try is connecting it wired and see if it still does it, if it runs fine wired then obviously it's something to do with the wireless card, but it actually sounds more like IE may have a glitch or bug.

Try a different browser such as firefox and see if it does it, eliminate possibilities to narrow the problematic area until you can clearly see what it is. Then it can be fixed.

Might be worth running CWshredder too, I've had a similar problem and it was just Cool web that was causing it.

So, wired it to the network.

    2nd download and run CWshredder

    3rd install different browser.

If after all that it still does it we can think about other areas.

Good thoughts. We'll try using IE first, as we use Mozilla Firefox 3.06 as our default. That might be the problem though--a different browser might fix it.
I'll do the hardwire second, since it involves moving hardware.... and I'm basically lazy. I'll download CWshredder right away. Thanks again.
