I've posted it in software as its more of a software thing over interesting links as we may get many questions, sooner or later on "will my pc be able to run Vista" so this small software app, not unlike the same one for XP will scan your PC for any issues in upgrading to Vista.

note: at time of writing this the link to the download has been pulled again, I got it yesterday, but do keep a check on the page for it being available again. I know they willbe working at least one issue that the upgrade advisor doesnt work with x64 Windows at present, so could explain it being pulled.

'People" are saying that it's a driver recognizability issue. All I can say is that it recommended that I can run Home premium on a Venice 3000+ 1GB rig which is wrong to me.

The advisor will no doubt go through some updates as to PC specs and which versions will work ok, the Vista performance rating tool also comes up with some weird results as to performance ratings of a PC.

Funny it told me I could run the Ultimate version on my older P4 2.4ghz 512mb RDRAM PC but would need to update only my GFX card to a DX9 compatible one, kinda makes me think I should just get a new GFX card over re-building a new PC?

Why do you say its wrong?

It may have recomended that version but I have no doubt if it recomended Home Premium you will be able to run the Ultimate version too, try ticking a few of the options on the 1st page, it will set the scan for testing compatability with ultimate.

I ran it on a PIII 866, and it told me I was ready for Vista Ultimate. :)

And here I was foolishly preparing to build a new PC.

Because there are different versions of Vista, with differing requirements.

Some people may have (in the future) Vista pre installed, and may be thinking of a different version or an upgrade.

They are just covering all bases. It's not that big a deal.

Also the Upgrade Advisor is an early beta to give folk a heads up on what sort of issues they may run into as Insomniac said its no biggy as things will change in the 7mths or so to the launch of Vista.

Main reason is 5308 runs perfectly fine with all the gfx. Yes, I did try other options but to no avail. This is all Beta so this has to be expected. Thanks.

Maybe it looks at home & pro users & just gives the equivalent of what people are running. Maybe.......

I run home & got the Home Premium.

Yep 5308 was good on driver support for me, 5342 lost a few major drivers , audio being one and ending up with some big bugs but 5365 is similar to 5308 but with alot more bug fixes, actually fairly stable.
