Windows vista won't boot on gateway notebook

Hi.... I have a gateway m-1625 laptop and I can't get windows vista to boot won't even boot in safe mode it just shows the curser with a black screen, I've tried startup repair numerous times tried startup repair numerous times and Windows vista still won't boot it all started when I uninstalled a program but it didn't remove everything so I tried to do a system restore and a window opened to schedule a system check for errors... I restarted it & it did the check for errors & it was taking forever so I left it running overnight. When I restarted it in the morning it seemed to start up fine till the screen for Windows to boot just stayed black with the cursor in the center..... is there anything I can do without losing any of my pictures & music?

Not had any experience with that particular laptop, but I have an Acer that was acting a bit like this, except I hadn't added or removed any programs from it prior to it failing to boot. It did just sit blank screened with a blinking cursor though.

Have you tried removing it from wall power, taking out the battery, then holding down the power button for about 30 seconds or so? If not, do that, then hook it all back up and see if it will boot. Worked for the Acer I had. I never figured out what the glitch was, and the problem has not happened since then (but I don't use the laptop all that much).

I'm a little of the opinion, though, your issue might be deeper that that, what with a failed program removal and system restore.
