I'm not sure that this is a software issue or not.

My wife slammed her Toshiba lappy lid shut pretty hard. I had to do a hard shutdown on it. When i turned it back on the Toshiba logo came up and then the little loader bar was going, then to no avail all I got to look at was a wonderful black screen... So i decided to shut it down, wait a bit, then turned it back on I hit f8 and then I was able to get to the System Recovery Options. when the window comes up for choosing a OS to load drivers for there is none. So I chose the next tab and now i am at the SRO.

Unfortunatly there was no backup done on this.:cry

I can click on the Startup Repair and nothing happens.
I can get to the CMD Prompt, This is what is on there.
    X:\sources\recovery\tools>
I've typed in Dir and get 32 files and 2 Directories.
I also typed in X:\sources\recovery\tools\Startup32_Tools.exe it said Hard Disk not found. Error:01-0134-0000
This is a Toshiba Satellite L355-S7827
I have tried to use a Vista recovery disk also but nothing. :cry

sorry this is long Please help. I have a feeling that i do need to get a new HDD for this but if i don't have to that would be great.

Try this it may help you out !

    Using chkdsk in cmd :

Warning: Use Check Disk at your own risk. On rare occasions I’ve experienced problems when using check disk in Windows Vista. Here are a few things to watch out for:

    • If you run check disk and your computer has to be restarted to scan your computer and your computer hangs at a black screen when it boots up, do the following: Turn the computer off and back on and immediately start pressing F8 on your keyboard repeatedly. A black screen with different boot options will appear. Select to use the Last known good configuration (advanced) boot option.
    • Never stop check disk once it has started. It could take hours to days to scan your hard drive depending on its size.
    Using the Command Line Interface
Check Disk can also be run using the command line (DOS) prompt.

    1. Open the command prompt with administrative privileges by typing cmd in the search box in the Start Menu and right-click cmd.exe in the search results and then select Run as Administrator.
    2. Type chkdsk followed by one or a combination of switches listed below in the command prompt.
If you run the check disk (chkdsk) command from the command prompt by typing just chkdsk check disk will run in read only mode. All it does is check for errors. It will not fix any errors it finds unless told to do so. This is done by adding switches when typing chkdsk in the command prompt.

A switch looks something like chkdsk /F. Notice the switch /F after the chkdsk command.
Below is a list of most of the switches used with the check disk command. You can use one or a combination of switches with the check disk command.

D: If you want check disk to scan a drive other than the C: drive, add the drive letter after chkdsk to tell it to scan that drive. If the drive is called X: on your computer it would look like chkdsk X:.

/F: The /F switch is the most common of the chkdsk switches. It tells chkdsk to fix any errors it finds. Chkdsk can’t fix errors on a disk that has open files. If chkdsk asks you if you want to check the drive next time Windows Vista boots or dismount the drive choose to check the drive next time Windows Vista boots. Never choose to dismount the drive. That option should only be used by a professional.

/R: The /R switch tells chkdsk to attempt to recover any bad sectors of the hard drive if any are found. A bad sector is a spot on the hard drive that can’t hold saved data anymore.

/I: The /I switch tells chkdsk to perform a less detailed but faster disk check.

/C: The /C switch tells chkdsk to skip the checking of cycles within a folder structure which reduces the scan time. Don’t ask me what this means.

An example of an exhaustive disk check using the command line interface is:
    chkdsk D: /F /R

The check disk command shown above will fix any errors it finds and also attempt to recover bad sectors of the D: drive if any are found.

Goood Luck let me know how things go !

    Rusty !

It is just possible that the hard drive has been dislodged, but it may well have died- If you have a hard drive caddy, you could check if it shows up in the disk management of another laptop/pc.
The caddys are only arond a fiver- but otherwise remove the hard drive and simply replace the original, to see if it will find it then.

baklogic may be right but trying it my way first won't cost you anything !

Sorry Rustyjack--Perhaps I was not clear- I meant remove and refit the hard drive that is playing up- not renew with another until tested in another computer/laptop.- :duck

As you can access cmd try this !

Boot your Computer in safe mode and try performing a SFC scan on your computer :

How to boot your system into Safe Mode…
    1. Restart your computer if it is powered on.
    2. Tap the F8 key after your computer initially powers on.
    3. Once you see the Advanced Boot Options menu you can stop tapping.
    4. Use the up/down arrow keys to highlight your selection.
    5. Select Safe Mode with Networking and press Enter.
    6. You should see drivers loading, and then please wait for the welcome screen.
    7. Logon to your computer using an account with Administrator privileges.
Steps to perform a SFC scan..
    1. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start , click All Programs , click Accessories , right-click Command Prompt , and then click Run as administrator . If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow .
    2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
    sfc /scannow
The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions

rustyjack? When I try to boot up in Safemode it will only go to
\windows\system32\drivers\msrpc.sys. It should go alot further than that, that i know.
Then after that i get that all familiar black screen again. :\

    I went ahead and tried a full recovery ( I finally was able to get to that screen) It did its thing and now this. it will start the usual loading then go to a screen prompting me to;
    1. Insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer.
    2. Choose your language settings, and click "Next".
    3. Click repair your computer.

That all would be fine but i dont have the installation disc for it :(
It will not start in safemode or anything.

    I do get this flash of the wonderful Blue Screen though and it says this;
STOP: c0000006 The instruction at 0x%08lx refrenced memory at 0x%08lx The required data was not placed into memory because of an I/O error status of 0x%08lx

and it just keeps running in circles now. :(

I don't know maybe i can use it as a discus???

If you now have that downloade disk- Insert it, run the cd, and when it gets going choose repair my computer- Vista has that repair option- You should be able to get it started-
Your CHKDSK SHOWED NO ERRORS ON THE HARD DRIVE, SO IT MAY WELL BE O.K.
If that does not work- see if you can borrow a Vista disk- same version as yours, and try the repair.
Alternitively, you may be able to invoke the recovery partition, as most laptops today seem to have one.
    http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD9102IR0000R01.htm

There is another way to invoke recovery, and I have to find it as I believe its to hold down the zero button as you start up- I will try to find it in my archive and come back- I have it somewhere.
