    Hi,

My daughter has an Advent Laptop running on XP.

For some reason, when you boot up the Laptop, it goes to the screen where it tells you that there was a previous error so I have the standard option to boot up i.e. Safe Mode, Normally, Last know config etc.

I've tried all options but I still return to the same screen after about 10 seconds. It would appear that this is not loading up windows.

I have a recovery CD which I created when the laptop was first used but I'm not sure to use this because I will lose all of her data and still not have the assurance that it will work.

    Any advice please?

    Thanks

Right when the PC powers up, press the F8 key repeatedly. You should get an expanded boot options menu with the option to 'Disable Automatic Restart upon System Failure". Select that option and boot 'er up. The PC should stop at a blue screen with an error message and an error code number; something like 0x0000007B or something similar. Post the message and the number, and we'll try to help ;)

    Hi and thanks.

I've done the F8 option and have the following error message

    STOP: 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x8533c890, 0xc0000102, 0x00000000)

    Thanks

It looks like you have an NTFS file system timing problem, or just a general file system problem. These can usually be fixed by booting into the recovery console, and running chkdsk.... Insert your Windows XP install CD. Reboot the PC and make sure that it's set to boot to the CD drive first. When you see "Press any key to boot from CD....", you'll press any key. Then you'll see the blue setup screens. After a bit, you'll see a blue screen where it asks if you want to install Windows or repair Windows in the recovery console; at this point, press 'R'. You'll end up in a black screen. It'll ask which Windows install you want to repair (there should only be one) and you'll press '1' and Enter. Then it'll ask for the Admin password; if you have one, enter it, other wise just press Enter. You should then be at a "C:\WINDOWS>" prompt. Now type "chkdsk /r" without the quotes, and press enter. This can take some time, so go have a beer and a sandwich, and maybe another beer. When it's done, type "exit", press enter, remove the Windows CD, and let the PC boot into Windows. With any luck, you should be OK :D
