Windows won't boot

Hey gang I need help. Windows XP on a Dell Inspiron 1505 laptop. Installed an update to Super AntiSpyware and now Windows won't start. Never had any trouble with SAS. Message is "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:"

<windows root>\system32\hal.dll

Of course I don't have a recovery or install disc for this machine. I'm in the process of moving data to a new laptop but ALL of my data is on the Dell. I found the file on my Dell desktop but can't figure out how to copy it to the laptop using DOS. Where do I go from here?

What I would do is use a Boot CD like Hiren's Boot CD or Bart PE to access the data and then transfer it to another source like an external drive or DVDs. That is probably your best bet.

 

Can you borrow a boot disk so you can get in and then try to go back to a restore point from before your SAS update or simply try to uninstall it? Have you checked the SAS forum for other people who had the same problem with the same update?
