Hello, I hope to get some help with the following problem, please. I did something foolhardy today out of frustration, and it has made me... well, even more furstrated.

First off, I have Windowx XP Pro on a Sony Vaio laptop. I had Protector Suite preinstalled on it. I had Protection Suite preinstalled on the laptop. Once in a while touching the touchpad would launch the Protection Suite, and it prompted me to entroll. Slightly annoying, but it didn't happen too often, so I would just close it, delaying attempts at uninstalling it. Today it went beserk and kept coming on every time my finger touched the touchpad. I went to Add/Remove Software in the Control Panel, but for some reason Protection Suite didn't have the uninstall option. I went directly to Program Files > Protection Suite and looked for an uninstall icon. Did not find one. I tried to delete Protection Suite manually and it didn't work. I was in the middle of urgent work and got furious and decided to try the Killbox. I tried to delete some of the files in protection suite with Killbox, but the attempts failed. I then set Killbox to delete Protection Suite on restart. (To give you the complete picture, I entered a few of the PS dlls into Killbox but then thought I should just enter the whole Protection Suite directory in addition, and did.) And then I tried to restart the computer. The problem is, it won't restart. It has gone into an endless restart cycle, failing to start. I have tried starting it in Safe Mode, but it didn't help.

My fingers are crossed in the hope if fixing this. I would be immensely grateful for any help and am looking forward to your responses. Thank you kindly in advance!

    Ugh! I feel your pain!

On the restarts, or even on the boot options menu (same menu as safe mode), are you offered a "Last Known Good Configuration" option? That may restore your system to a stable state.

And, it doesn't sound like it, but I ask to be thorough: can you possibly get to system restore before a restart?

Just want be sure to exhaust the easy options before digging deeper on this issue.

P.S. I'm not going to report you because you sound like you have a legitimate problem, but you should know that including an SEO link on your very first post, (one that has nothing to do with SEO) could very easily be interpreted as linkspamming, and cause the hammer to be brought down on you. I've clipped it from my response so that you're not getting any free linkbuilding from me.

    Hi, Mada!

Thank you for your patience with me. First off, about that link -- I fully intended to remove it, but wanted to see if the link would be nofollow: professional habit, sorry. (BTW, it's not, I recommend nofollow links for forums to minimize spam). When I tried to remove it I found out that the editing period, which seemed short, had expired. My apologies.

I should have mentioned that I did try "Last configuration that worked" and "Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows controllers only)," but the laptop failed to restart just the same, alas. Do you have any further ideas? Much appreciated.

Drag. Sounds like we won't be able to do anything easily/automatically, short of a reinstall.

We may be able to manually identify where the system is failing, though. On your advanced startup options menu (same menu as safe mode), do you have an option to disable automatic restart on system failure?

I am trying to have the system simply stop (instead of restarting) so that we check where exactly in the boot process that it is failing. If you have an option to disable automatic restart, please use it, and then reboot to the startup options menu again, and choose "debugging mode". With any luck, we should get a list of the drivers the system is loading, and it should stop on the one that is causing your restart. From there, hopefully, we can repair the file(s).

Mada, I'm afraid things have got worse. I disabled autorestart on failure, and it crashed (blue screen). I started it up abd went into debugging mode; it crashed and now won't start at all -- it seems completely dead. Ah well. Guess I'll have to take it someplace to see if the data can be recovered.

Nevertheless, thanks very much for trying to help!
