After starting up my computer and Windows XP Home 32bits, I get the BSOD. I’ll get as far as the black start-up screen in Windows before it aborts. Can someone please help me?

About a week ago I got a virus, Infostealer gampass, and I tried to fix it myself. Whilst trying to fix it I probably did something wrong. When I rebooted my PC, Windows started up as normal up to the point where one is supposed to login. As I am the only user it usually automatically logs in, this time however I had to choose my username. I clicked on my username and it started to login, however as I saw my desktop background it logged off again. This happened every time I started my computer. I tried in Safe Mode as well, but the same thing happened. This is when I try to get some help in the Malware forum as I thought it might be because of the virus. According to the expert at the Malware forum it most likely isn’t because the virus I got infected with was more or less harmless and just a nuisance. They try to help me anyway, and this is what we did:

    1. First we try using the Windows CP cd. We use Windows XP setup to try to fix it, not the recovery console. However repairing it using the installation method doesn’t work. After we tried this I got the BSOD when booting up the PC.

    2. This time we tried the Recovery console. I ran the chkdsk /f but it didn’t help. Same BSOD.

    3. Tried the Recovery console again, but this time I ran the chkdsk/r. This didn’t help either. Same BSOD

The BSOD message I get is:
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Computer has encountered a problem, and Windows has shut down to prevent damage.

Restart the computer if this is the first time this has happened.

    If not:
Run a virus scan. Remove any recently installed HD, or HD drivers. Make sure the HD is configured correctly, and has shut down properly. Run chkdsk /f to search for any errors on the HD, and reboot.

    Technical info:

    *** STOP 0x0000007B (0xF789E63C, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After this it was suggested that I try this part of the forum instead. So now I am hoping to get some help from you guys. Any help would be much appreciated.

Yes, I was afraid that I had to do that. As the I can't get into Windows, I won't be able to follow the steps in the link you posted.

This is probably not the right place to ask, the Hardware forum might be better, but is there any way I can rescue some of the files in my corrupted HD. It’s one HD divided into C:\, D:\ and E:\, with Windows installed on to the C:\-part.

I have backup of the most important files, but it would be nice to get the some of the files which weren’t deemed important enough to be backed up. I.e files on D:\ or E:\.
