I haven't used my PC for a few days and when I came to use it I found that it was off. So I turned it on and it brings up the XP loading screen and as it starts to load it jumps to a screen allowing me to open Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode and Safe Mode with prompt.

It also allows me to restart from a restore point which I have tried but just repeats the process.

I have started in SafeMode with Networking.

If I turn the PC off it will restart and the red working light will run but it won't fire anything up (Monitor remains in sleep mode) and I have to wait for about 10 mins at which point the Safe Mode option will be repeated.

I have run the logs as requested in the Malware forum and TimW reviewed them and said that he cannot find any traces of Malware so asked me to post here instead.

I'm happy to provide more detail in any way necessary.

    Yours hopefully CWD1982

    Hi,

By this do you mean Last Known Good Configuration from the safe mode options screen or did you run a System Restore from within Safe Mode with Networking?

I think I would run a chkdsk on the C: drive first. Then if that doesn't help and you haven't tried an actual restore point, I would try that.

So go to My Computer and right-click the icon for the C: drive and select Properties. Under the Tools tab select Error Checking. Tick both boxes and hit Start. It will schedule for next reboot. Reboot and let it run. See if it still gives only Safe Mode options or moves more quickly through the start up process.

Hi Sach2 thanks for your reply.

I meant within the Safe Mode options page not from within Safe Mode with Networking

I followed the disk check process. When I rebooted nothing would load up as usual so I left the computer off for 5 mins and it gave the Safe Mode options again so I clicked in to get to Safe Mode with networking and a list of files all within the Windows\system32\drivers folder and then with .sys at the end ran down the screen but instead of going blank the Safe Mode option came back.

I clicked into the Safe Mode with networking option again and the same list of files ran through but this time it got stuck on that screen and nothing else happened.

I now cannot start the PC in safe mode.

A msg flashes up for about 1 second saying something which i cant read and then "press shift and F10" so I pressed it and it brings up a blue screen titled

    Realtek configuration menu v2.13

There are various options in this menu. I have not pressed anything in the menu, not sure if this is of any help

Thanks for your help so far

That is not good. The chkdsk is still what I would have tried but 1 time in 50 it ends up causing a worse problem.

Make a note of the last file safe mode lists, mup.sys is the typical one it hangs on but I've never seen a good fix. I'm hoping it is a different file. Maybe running chkdsk again from recovery console would be an option. (Chkdsk just looks for corrupted files and tries to rewrite them to a clean area of the HD.)

Do you have an XP CD to try to get into recovery console?

    Hi Sach2

The file that the system was hanging on was the following

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\agpCQP.sys

However ithe system has stopped hanging now and just reruns the process where it lets me pick Safe Modes then attempts to start in safe mode then it just returns back to the safe mode options

I've had a look for the XP CD but can't find it sorry

    Hi Sach

In addition and amendment to my last post I can now access the Recovery console.

Hopefully this will help you with further assisting me when possible

    Thanks once again
