Windows XP and Fax problem

I need help. I recently received a copy of Windows 2003 Small Business Server Premium Edition for attending a Microsoft TS2 Seminar. Included with it was FrontPage 2003. Now I was not interested in installing the OS but did like the idea of having FrontPage 2003. I installed it and everything went fine as far as installation, but when I tried to open Office XP things like Word or Power Point they took forever to open (I mean get up walk away and go do something else fo awhile). Well I uninstalled FrontPage 2003 and it had removed FrontPage 2002 so I just uninstalled Office XP and reinstalled it. All the Office features open quickly now just like before FrontPage 2003, but everytime I restart my computer I get the message below.

The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removal disk that is not available.

Insert the "Fax" disk and click OK

I have looked in the MSCONFIG, Startup and can't find anything associated with it. Can somebody help me stop the annoyance please. Windows still runs fine I just have to cancel that everytime I reboot.

Windows XP Pro SP1 with all critical updates installed
    Asus A7N8X Deluxe 2.0
    AMD XP 2500+ Barton
    512 Corsair Platinum Series RAM
    2 x 40GB Seagate drives in SATA RAID 0

If you need any other info let me know.

BTW I went to add/remove programs and "Add/Remove Windows Components" and installed the FAX service, but that still didn't stop it. I am not afraid of the registry if that is what it requires to resolve this issue.

Try this MSKB page for a possible solution

Meanwhile, I'll hunt around there, too. This happens VERY frequently. I think it has even happened to me when I had just used Office Update. Let's see whether we can find the answer in the KB.

EDIT: Raider, you know your way around your machine, so this may sound goofy to you, but humor me: Please check and completely empty the Temp folder in Docs & Sett's\yourusername\Local Sett's, AND the Temp folder in the Windows folder. I keep wondering whether there's a file in there that makes Wdws think the recent re-installs aren't finished.

If you find stuff and clear it and reboot and the message is gone, great! If not, I think THIS is worth a try: The MSKB articles keep referring to Office features installed as "Install on first use." If there's a switch anywhere in Office that's set to fire at boot, it may be that that switch triggers the need to run that "Install on first use" feature. Mebbe not, but if you make sure your BIOS is (at least temporarily) set to pass by the CD drive during boot, then boot with the Office Installation disc number 1 in the drive, the feature may go ahead and finish that process, and never bother you again. Can't take more than two minutes to check and adjust the BIOS and try a boot with the CD in the drive and see.

Well I deleted all the temp files and Have tried Windows XP disk, Office XP disk and FrontPage 2003 disk with no luck at all. I even tried System Restore which tells me my computer cannot be restored to an earlier time (lotta good having that does).

Hmmm. Sorry none of that helped, Raider.

Have you actually opened and USED each of the Office apps yet? If you'll open a new project in each, just make a nonsense entry, save or don't save (doesn't matter), and close each app, mebbe the annoying culprit will show itself during that process.

I wish I could remember what I did to get rid of it the last time it hit me.

BTW, have you been BACK to OFFICE UPDATE and checked for patches for your recent re-installation of Office? It may be that you're suffering from a bug that's been fixed since the CD was released. Worth a try.

Problem solved. It was actually one of my printer programs that was causing the problem. I really found out by accident. It was looking for a Fax.msi so I just started putting CD's in and doing a search and found it on my HP PSC1350 CD. Thanks for all the digging and searching.

    Congrats, Sherlock!

Glad you got it, Raider. We'll remember the solution for the NEXT time somebody posts that problem, and their message asks for the "Fax" disc.

If you want to get your sustem restore up & runnning again do this>>

Right click my computer/properties/system restore. Tick 'Turn off system restore'. Reboot. [this will delete all your restore points but seeing how yours is not working it won't matter.]

Now go back & turn it on again. A new point will be made. It should now be working.
