Can anyone tell me why I cannot update my new computer from the windows update site? I'm running XP pro ... but I've never had a problem with windows update. I want to set it up to automatically check for updates, but it will not let me.

Now you're going to find out how dumb I am. I have no idea. I just got it out of the box 2 hours ago.

    no such thing..

if you just set up the machine then the default user is set up as an adminstrator. So chances are it's not that.

ok, so what sort of error does it give you?

thanks for the help...sorry I was away a few days. I did try to access windows update via the control panel. Here is the message I get when i try to scan my machine for updates:

Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page.

Select from any of the following pages for information about Windows Update services, or send us your feedback.

You can also get online support if you are having problems with Windows Update.

Send error number to Microsoft (0x800A138F)
Note This sends error information but does not create a support incident; you may or may not receive a response.

I bought this laptop prepackaged from Computer Discount Warehouse.

Score ONE MORE for the dper!

Lots of people just don't think about the fact that a newly unpacked and plugged in machine with software installed probably has no idea

    1. Where it IS in the world,
    or
    2. What TIME it is (on what DATE).

I work on computers all the time that are running in the Eastern Time Zone, but think they're in California, so the time offset is wrong, and I see computers all the time that have clocks that are wrong by a long shot.

It oughta be stencilled on every new pre-loaded computer box: "After you boot successfully for the first time, set the time, the date, and the time zone correctly."

Now for a neat little trick ... the change in date made my 'free' Norton (a few months free) go out of date. LOL...isn't that a kicker?
