Please search before asking often asked questions. Theres a forum called Tips, Tricks and How To's with a formatting guide. One problem you may have is that you MAY need to go from NTFS to FAT on your hard drives. This can be done easily with Partition Magic, not so easily without tools. You may be able to boot from the XP cd and start setup and convert it back to FAT from there, abort install and reboot from floppy to install Windows, but I am not too sure, because XP is simply a superior OS by leaps and bounds from 98 (not to mentione the dreaded Millenium) and I know of no one who would go back. If you never converted to NTFS and your drives are still FAT, then that was a mistake in your install of XP, but in this case, you dont need to convert. Any problems your having can be fixed, like adding memory if it seems too slow.

I put xp on an older system last week. It only had a 2 gig hd and was curious if it would go on. Well it did and decided to put 98 back on and it was a no go. I had to do what was said in the last reply, reinstall xp but in the fat file format then you can partition format and install 98.

When you put the xp disc in it will ask you during the installation which file format you would like to install it in. I think there is four choices, pick either of the fat. Hope this helps.

You may have to boot from a floppy and run fdisk, which partitions and formats, but first just try to install from the cd to see if it will work.

I dont know, you have yet to tell us what the machine is, most brand name PC's come with too much crap, so I would install 98 clean. As far as whether to put in the 98 CD or floppy, I once again tell you there is a tutorial in the Tips And Tricks. This is there so we do not have to answer these questions over and over.

He does not need to fdisk. Let him read the tutorial and get back to us with any questions not answered there.

Fdisk requires some knowledge on what to do. Fdisk is not format, fdisk is fdisk and format is format, 2 seperate programs that need to be run seperate, hence fdisk does not format. You should be able to skip fdisk and run format from the boot floppy as explained in the user guide I have referenced a couple of times.
