Posted this in Hardware by mistake! Just noticed that my XP Home SP2 is reporting my DVD-RW as a CD drive in 'My Computer'. Device Manager shows the correct info. The unit records as normal using Nero however right clicking> properties doesn't show a recording tab. Any ideas? Thanks.

    ,,, what??

i didnt fully understand but ill try to figure this out..

Xp sees your dvd as a cd
    but nero doesnt?

im not sure, if nero recognizes it , it shouldnt be a big deal since you can burn dvds anyway... either way i dont know.. go to the website of the dvdrw maker.. they probably have drivers to download.. if they're not there try installing the latest service pack/ hotfix from microsoft. you may have an old service pack that doesnt recognize that type of media drive...

    good luck!

did Nero come with your computer or did you download it also as reported in the last post if your computer is not up to date that could also be problem.

Click START / ALL PROGRAMS / WINDOW UPDATE and let the computer do the rest if after that you have the same problem go to the Nero website and check for driver updates

You're missing the point here Guys. The drive is OE and everything was working like it should for the last two years. Now suddenly Windows has decided that I don't have a DVD-RW drive. The drive burns using the OE Nero it's just that Windows now reports it as a CD drive! Something obviously has changed in Windows to cause it to now mis-identify the drive. System Restore was as much use as an ashtray on a motorcycle. Is there a way of getting Windows to recognise the drive properly, as it always used to?

I have 3 DVDRW drives in my computer. If I place a DVD or CDR disk in any of the drives and go to Windows Explorer, the drive with the disk in it shows it as being a CD drive. I have no problems with the drives whatsoever.

Removing the disk returns it to reading(showing up as) a DVDRW drive.

I guess it's just one of those little Windows anomolies.

    as puppywunder58 says
I too, have 3 dvd writers hooked up and same story
I noticed this immediately after performing a clean reinstall and fresh updating from microsoft 3 months ago in march.
It has never affected their performance or burning capabilities and the computer is running better than ever with clean install. So, I too have just chalked it up to a windows quirk. Go figure. Hope this eases your concern.

I have a feeling that I am not getting anywhere with this post. I have not reinstalled Windows; I do realise that if you insert a CD/DVD in the drive that Windows will report the Volume Label; The fact remains is that Windows hitherto has shown DVD-RW when opening Explorer, in the last couple of days it now shows CDdrive. All I would like to know is if there is a simple method of making Windows recognise the device correctly. Someone must know! Thanks for your replies. Jem
