    Hello everybody,

My Help and Support doesn't open. There are no error messages after I click on it. Spent quite a bit of time searching for a solution, but nothing works.

    Any help would be appreciated.

I did some poking around. Try going to C:\Windows\Help\windows.chm and double-click it. It should open a window like that below (I have XP Pro so yours will be different) then click on the link that I have put in a purple box in the example below.
    -OR-
Click Start > Run and type hcp://services/centers/homepage and press Enter.

I hope this helps! Good luck!

I tried both procedures, and nothing would open.

I tried right-clicking on the pchealth.inf file. It asks for dataspec.xml. I put in my Windows XP disc, and I get a message saying it's the wrong disc.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Hi

From the above Microsoft KB page did you check that the Help & Support service was started?

See if Help & Support will open manually, but pasting this %Windir%\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\HelpCtr.exe into a RUN box, ( Click Start > Run ) and "IF" you can open it, possible is an application path issue, where some other application has taken or removed that path.

For the fix try this registry patch from Ramish http://windowsxp.mvps.org/startmenuhelp.htm

As a side note do you use any Registry Cleaners? if so which ones? as in past Easy Cleaner did corrupt Help & Support.

I tried pasting and running that command, and nothing happens. As for Registry Cleaners, my wife's laptop was running real slow, so I was shopping around for a cure thinking it might be a registry issue. I think I might have used my computer to test run something, but it was a while back. Don't recall a name or anything.

    Anything else to try?

    Thanks!

I found the Compiled HMTL Help File. When I try opening it, I get the message:

    Cannot open the file mk:mad:MSITStore:c:\windows\help\Windows.chm

I was there earlier today. All I have is a Dell Reinstallation CD.

    After I right clicked on pchealth.inf, I needed dataspec.xml.

    I'll try again.

    Thanks.

I actually got the procedure done. All the files seems to copy from the Dell
CD, and the process finished. But no Help and Support.

    Any other suggestions?

    Thanks.

I just checked out the link. Now we might be getting somewhere.

I don't have time tonight as I gotta get REAL early, but I'll
    try it tomorrow night.

    Thanks!

Sorry I haven't had time to tinker with this issue lately.

I was reading the link you gave me, and it seems the
instructions are for Windows 98, and it regards the
hhctrl.ocx file from Internet Explorer 5.0

I just tried the suggestions at:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555329/en-us

and my computer said the registry entry already exits.

Still eager to get my Help and Support going, somehow.

    Appreciate your help on this.

    Tim,

    Well!

    I ran your first option:

    regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\hhctrl.ocx

    and nothing happened.

    I downloaded and ran:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...26-ae89-4cb3-a819-e6da160f2e66&DisplayLang=en

and I got a message saying updates were already installed, or something
    like that.

Then I downloaded and ran your third suggestion:

    http://helpware.net/downloads/index.htm#MJs

MY HELP AND SUPPORT NOW WORKS! The issue has been resolved. I'm not sure I understand what MJs did, but what the heck.

I WAS thinking about just going forward without Help and Support, or resorting to repairing Windows XP at some time.

Thanks again for your patience and help.

Phew, finally. I'm glad it is now working for you. I'm always hesitant about putting strange programs on a computer but when you try all the other avenues and nothing seems to work then it is a choice of having something broken or taking a chance.
