    Hello,

Making this thread for my father for reference for when I leave. I came out here and his PC was fine. But he got a dsl service and shortly after that the explorer itself was getting an error (sorry did not screenshot it) but it made it crash to a black screen. He had his cd so we did a restore off of his OS/Emachines cd and everything appeared to work fine. I installed avg free, yim, updated his drivers, updated windows, k-lite codec pack, spybot search and destroy, all the basic stuff to get going and be safe.

Then suddenly last night it started to have the explorer issue again. The pc gets slower and slower and slower then just more or less crashes without an error window. I was asleep when this happened but it happened again today as well. He reinstalled IE and oddly enough it fixed the OS explorer issue at least till a reboot or a little later. Then it comes right back again. It doesn't make sense to me since one is a browser and the other the OS explorer itself. He did this right now and that is how I am able to type on this forum.

Now avg did find a trojan and move it to the vault for reference. Spybot found nothing and no updates to anything fix squat so far. So just the really odd lil fix noted above. I'm great with my own pc but not so much others. So I'd love some help for him in this thread in fixing it that he can reference while I'm not here and get help. Instead of waiting on me again or anything. Setup this forum account for him as well.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give him. I am bookmarking this page for him. :)

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

    Greetings, GatorNova (both of you!)...

First thing I would suggest is to make sure the machine is cleaned - the fact that you found at least one trojan leads me to believe there could possibly be other malware lurking...hit the Malware Forum and thoroughly clean your system...

Try to get copies of any error reports, especially at or near the time of the crashes, and post them here...

Also, many times these 'black screens' turn out to be hardware issues: overheating and RAM problems sometimes present on borderline machines such as yours after acquiring fast internet, because of the suddenly increased load...

Keep us posted, and good luck!

I tried to follow the instructions the best I could since it was throughout the evening and late into the morning running some of this stuff. I think I left AVG up on a couple scans but that was it. Followed the instructions fairly well, install, log, reboot, etc. Went from one link to another on your forums for malware and it did find quite abit. So going to put the logs up here for that now.

I believe this is my sisters fault not my dads though. She came out here for 6 months while he was on vacation and she has a habit of always installing those damn toolbars and such with im's, not updating protection, bleck.

Anyways posting logs and after this my dad will have to do it all. So please be gentle and try to help him. I fly back out to my home tomorrow and just won't be around for it. It still seemed to have the issue once or twice after the scans that removed tons. So no idea on any real effect here but here is hoping.

I mean he just got dsl finally and was looking forward to enjoying it. Instead since that very day we've been troubleshooting this damn thing. Nightmare city.

Tack on for the 5th log file for this unfun part of the visit.

Thanks again in advance you peeps.

Edit: Oh.. and Caliban? That black screen happened kinda oddly. The computer appeared to run fine until the dsl was installed. Then the slowdown and other issues noted in the first post happened. And since that post and running things no black screens but some slowdown during the whole process after restarts that went away roughly after 15-20 minutes and I went on with the whole thing. None yet since I finished but.... I haven't restarted yet and I am tired from waiting on these damn logs all night trying to get it done before I leave. :(

Hello and welcome to MG's :)
You need to post your logs in Malware Removal for some clean up.
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=35

Plus you need to address the below by adding another 512MB or a Gig of RAM.
    Cheers..

Malware thread has been answered and his logs are clean. Lack of RAM was again pointed out to the OP.

Ya, cept it my dads pc and not mine Tim. I was visiting to see him after a very long time and did not fully know his pc. I also had to do this late at night with scans that took hours, while packing for my plane trip home, and being tired as well. I'll look into the ram later if or when I go back out there.

Also thanks for the reply in the other thread but talk about coming across as a lil aggressive to someone who made a mistake on combofix super stinking late in the morning. Thanks but sue me for being human. =/
