    Hi,

a couple of weeks ago I came to this forum cause I needed some popups and other malware removed. It turned out my OS was outdated (http://forums.majorgeeks.com/search.php?searchid=304562). Someone then took me through the whole malware removal tutorial and adviced me to upgrade to SP2. The tutarial helped to got rid of all the malware but since I installed SP2 my computer is so slow. It takes ages to boot or to connect to the internet and open explorer. After 10 minutes or so, everything seems to work on normal speed but with occasional 'freezes' that last about 1 minute.

This is really annoying as you can image. Any suggestions are welcome.

Too much crapola in your Startup I'd say. When you boot up you shold only allow the programs to start that you need. Check out whats loading at bootup. The other alternative may be that the XP2 firewall is loading and conflicting with an existing firewall.

    Thanks for answering.

So where can I see what programs are loading on startup?

Also, the windows firewall is not enabled in the control panel, yet when I click 'security centre' it says that the firewall is enabled. When I try to disable it there, it redirects me to 'Windows firewall', which is disabled!?

I also run Norton 2005 but I don't think it has a firewall, or is the 'internet worm protection' a firewall?

As to startup programs ....start / run / type "msconfig" without qoutes ,...last tab is startup items ...

Is the security center a McAfee program ...and are you also running Norton on top of that? Big no-no, if you are.

These are the startup programs. How do I know which ones to disable?
    ccApp
    SNDMon
    qttask
    RealOneMessageCenter
    jusched
    Dragdiag
    MSASCUI
    ctfmon
    Adobe Reader Quick Start

And no, the security center is not a McAfee program. It's where you can change security settings after you install SP2. I mean this: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/security/internet/sp2_wscintro.mspx

    thanks for your help.

Everything in your startup is needed ...although the cftman (part of Office suite) could be suspicious, if in wrong folder ....the rest have to do with defender, norton, quick time, real player, jave, and your dsl modem.
