I am trying to install Windows XP on a machine currently running 2000. I get all the way through the install and then it freezes on registering components and I have to reinstall Windows 2000 after I reboot.

The XP is from a brand new Gateway computer, but XP already came installed on the computer so I just took the unopened XP and took it home to install on my personal computer. On the cover of the XP is says intended for installation on a brand new Gateway only! Does this mean I can't install it on my Compaq at home? If so, how do I get around that freezing part?

they are made for the hardware that is on the machine in which the XP CD came with ...in this case , the gateway. It's essentially an image of an already installed and configured PC that they package up and ship off as a restore cd.. it's specific to that hardware.
