Windows XP keeps on freezing

Hello
At random intervals my system is freezing, I have run the XP cleaning guide, and been a bit over keen deleting bits, I am now trying to recover 2 years of photo`s I have deleted (and emptied he recycle bin) but the system is freezing all the time.

What could be causing the freezing? Also how can i get back the missing photos? :confused
