Windows XP +Linux problem

ok...i was using Windows Xp for a long time when i decided to try out Ubuntu on a friend's recommendation....i borrowed an HDD and installed Linux in it....now i have to return the HDD and install both on my own HDD. so, i have a question on dual boot...

i know i have to install Windows XP first...but here's the problem:
consider i installed XP and then Linux(Ubuntu in my case if u need to know).
now, if i repair my XP installation, what would be the effect? would it over-write my current MBR and make me lose my Linux...or will it work fine?

also, after repairing my XP, would i need to install Linux again?

 

Since you want to dual boot and your using Ubuntu, ubuntu actually includes a neat feature where you can install a version of it inside a windows installation. It can be installed and uninstalled just like any other program and gives you the option at start up to boot into ubuntu.

Rocyali, the linux forum should be able to give you an exact answer. From 4-5 year old memory--if the MBR is overwritten by an XP repair/install it doesn't damage the linux OS (no full reinstall needed). You may need to reinstall the boot loader. When I had a dual boot with win98 I had to do this several times( 98 and I did not get along for more than a few months at a time without a reinstall ). It was fairly simple, I believe just one command line from a linux startup disc that needed the location of the grubloader file on the linux partition. I don't remember the exact command but someone in the linux forum might be able to explain how things work. There may be a more common boot loader for Ubuntu now, I was using old Corel debian.
