Windows XP locks up on load

I'm not completely useless around my computer but far from being compter literate though.

After shutting down my computer normally and starting it up the enxt day it boots up as usual runs through the windows xp loading screen and then just goes black. The HD light will usally stay on.

Upon restarting it and trying every avilable mode still no luck. When trying in safe mode it wont even make it that far it lists off all the files and then just hangs up.

Of course I wasn't smart enough to make a boot disk and an out of town friend has my xp disk. The last thing I installed on the computer was the upgrade of Kazza. But my Norton antivirus didnt pick anything up.

I also tried useing my norton disk to boot it up which it tries and finds no virus... of course the disk is of 2002 vintage as I've bought my updates online. I bought the extended download though so not sure if I can do anything there.

Right now I'm screwed with fixing it myself or driveing 3 hours to where my disk is and more computer smart people.... I'd rather not have to do that and I'd be crying if I loose all my mp3's and data..... Is there any ideas or hope shy of wipeing the drive?

 

Try visiting www.bootdisk.com There, you can download the files to create a new boot disk for your system. Hopefully, you can use these to boot your system, and perform some diagnoses.
