windows xp - monitor goes black after splash screen

Windows XP Professional SP2
KDS Rad-7 monitor
All-in-wonder 128 Pro AGP video card

Everything has been working great for a couple of years. All of a sudden the display will be fine until just after the splash screen. I see the splash screen and then the monitor goes black. The LED stays green like it is still getting a signal, but the login screen never displays.

No hardware or software had been modified prior to this occuring.

I can boot into safe mode, safe mode with networking, and even VGA mode. Once windows is loaded, I can even go into the display properties and change the settings to high resolution/1024X768 and everything looks like it should if it loaded properly to begin with.

I have attempted the following:
System restore to a day when the display was working properly (even though I had not modified anything)
Reseated video card

This is not a monitor problem, more than likely a hard drive problem, see if your bios has Smart, it will tell you the status of your hard drive. ed

 

Checked BIOS, it does not have SMART.
Hard drives show healthy in computer management.
Computer boots fine in all reduced-resolution-video modes.

Any further help would be appreciated.

 

Possibly a driver problem, maybe a driver update will help,
