Windows XP Paging File

Hello Majorgeeks.

I just got a quick question about the windows xp paging file. What I want to know is what size do you set the paging file?

It saying recommended 2302MB current allocated 4092MB just want to know if its enough or should I lower it.

 

Unless you have specific needs, and fully understand what you are doing, you should let Windows manage the paging file size.

 

I have uploaded a everest report of my memory. I just want to know if the memory looks alright on there and my paging file is quite huge

 

If it's the Swap Space and Virtual Memory you are looking at, that isn't the paging file. The paging file is a hidden file at the root of the system drive called pagefile.sys, and unless you have overriden the default settings Windows will have set it at a fixed 1½ times your physical memory, i.e. about 2300MB. The two readings in the report are telling you how much disk space is available to Windows to use as extra RAM should it need it.

You can see the file in Windows Explorer by setting the View settings to show hidden and system files.

 

ok thanks very much, just to confirm it is Virtual Memory that I'm looking at, windows is recommending 2300MB but I increased to maximum 4028MB will that cause a problem to my system

 

It shouldn't cause any problem but isn't necessary either. You have simply allocated some of your computer's resources so they can't now be used for any other purpose. As I said before, better just to let Windows manage it.
