I have just hooked my laptop up to the internet for the first time in about 3 months (school out for the summer) and downloaded "critical updates." It now tells me when it reboots, that according to the windows validation tool, I might be a victim of software counterfeiting. There is also an icon in the system tray that looks like a blue star. Anybody ever heard of this icon or exactly what it means and what to do?

Yes you are a victim of Windows Genuine Advantage ( WGA ), question is your version of XP legitimate or a warez copy?

Description of Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA)

IF a copied version of XP, then you can either buy a copy or if you didnt know you had bought with your PC an illegal copy, then in the below FAQ are some steps you can follow to inform Microsoft on this, you will need the address of the company that sold you your PC and software and they may give you a free copy.

If your version is legitimate then you need to contact Microsoft again in the below FAQ.
