Wait ....like the rest or us ...some installs have taken me 2 hours ...some 5 ...depends on the system. If the screen is changing info, just have patience ....:) It usually seems to hang for most people at the 13 minutes left.

also im not even 13 minutes in to the install this is like the 3rd screen it loads a bunch of stuff then says setup is starting (sometimes it even freezes there) then it goes to "processing information file" and then nothing

Let's start at the beginning ....is this a new 'puter? If not, what was the reason for a new install of xp ...were there other issues? This is a full, new install or a repair install .....how much ram do you have ....

its not a new comp but it is a new install but on a slave hard drive I now want to make my master.my old drive is a 20g with a pirated non service pack 2 XP Pro that has been giving me problems for months so i would now like to remove that drive and use my newer 120g drive ram at the moment is 256 its a p4 :)

  7. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

OK, would suggest you remove the master and place the slave as the master (changing jumpers, etc), then try to do a new install ....

  8. DKO

    DKO Private E-2

well first i tried to format the drive thru device manager it kept telling me thre drive was in use so i made it the master and removed the other completely. i went intocmos/bios and "boot from cd" then put the disc in and rebooted. this is where im at now. sorry to be such a pain i should have told you that first. :( I really apreciate the help)

Step by step, inch by inch .....pull the case and make sure that nothing is "unseated" ....the ide cable to the drive is firmly seated as is the ram ...:) :)

  10. DKO

    DKO Private E-2

ok as far as i can see all is good

  11. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

If cables are firm and ram is fully seated ...tell me exactly what happens when you restart ....system info screen ..prompt to boot from cd (enter) ...reads files (preparing to install) ...then it quits?

  12. DKO

    DKO Private E-2

ok ummmm i just restarted to tell you step by step and now nothing is happening i hear stuff but nothing on my monitor......

  13. DKO

    DKO Private E-2

it did a couple of loud long beeps which was unusual

  14. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Beep codes ....depending on your motherboard manual, it is telling you something is wrong ....bad/unseated ram ...video card ...one beep is normal ...what follows is the fault code. Google (thought I prefer alltheweb) the " "motherboard" beep codes "

  15. DKO

    DKO Private E-2

 ok back must have knocked my vid card...anyway when starting with the one drive as master and cd in

1-auto starts to blue screen saying windows setup up top and the rest on the bottom as follows.

2 -setup is loading files(kernel DLL,drivers etc.) about 10 minutes

3-setup is starting windows sometimes freezes at this stage.

4- if it gets this far says- processing information file then freezes. as I type this to you it didnt make it to step 4:mad:

Was there anything installed on this drive ...cd/dvd copying programs? antivirus programs ....and one other thing ...go into the bios and see if it has the virus protection on for the mbr ...if so turn it off.

  17. DKO

    DKO Private E-2

anti virus is off.....there was some things installed on the drive like poker and some games, paintshop pro, messengers, thats about it i uninstalled all of it. now there only system recycler, pagefile (not sure what it is) and i cannot delete those it wont let me.

Next question ...did this drive come with a setup disc ...they usually will format the drive after first install to prep for the os install.

  19. DKO

    DKO Private E-2

nope no disc came with it. I bought it installed it formatted it and originally intended on using it for everything but my OS. however I never got that far as my problems with my other XP Pro began

This using the "old" hard drive? Cause I'm really starting to think you got some bad ram.

  24. DKO

    DKO Private E-2

yes this is the 20g drive with xp on it.....i bought new ram awhile ago as i figured the same(altho i am noexpert) but it did not help anything thats why i figured out with the old and in with the new drive and OS.

Right click on my computer and on the general tab it will tell you how much ram it is detecting ....what does it say?

  26. DKO

    DKO Private E-2

    right click my comp/properties/general. ??

    If yes 224mb

  27. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

You got a bad stick ....should read 256 (minus a few for a video card, but only a few ....not 32...) ....when you first boot up does it go thru a system test that includes the ram .....would suggest you remove one at a time and find the one that is faulty.....they have to be the same type of ram.

  28. DKO

    DKO Private E-2

i believe it does...how would i know if the test happens and how would i know if its good/bad

  29. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Some mobo's do a self test and run through the ram and ID the installed hard drives before they start up ....but windows xp will run with 128mg's of ram ...so pull one stick and boot up ...see if it reports as 128 ...is so, switch to be sure it's the other....this could be the cause of the faoults with both drives.

  30. DKO

    DKO Private E-2

ok i will have to get a new stick cause i took it back when the errors continued...i would appreciate it if you could check back to this thread once i get the stick and try again.
and thanx again for your patience and advice.
this may take a day or so everything is closed now. I have 1 stick 256 not two 128

  31. DKO

    DKO Private E-2

    does that make any difference

  32. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Still pretty sure it's your ram .....do what you can (beg, borrow, ...)..then post back ....it will come back to the first page.

  33. DKO

    DKO Private E-2

Do you have any peripheral devices attached? I would unhook any scanners, printers, usb divices, etc. and try the install.

    Steve

  38. DKO

    DKO Private E-2

nope nothing...since new ram didnt help could this be a board issue?

  39. Matacumbie

    Matacumbie Rocky Top

I thought Tim was right about the ram, that seems to be the most common issue. Probably some type of hardware problem but hard to say which one(s).

The only other thing I can think of besides hardware would be try cleaning the XP cd and see if that helps.

    Steve

  40. DKO

clean as a whistle........still cant get past the setup-repair/install screen

  41. Matacumbie

    Matacumbie Rocky Top

I missed that part "setup-repair/install screen". Walk off and leave it 15 to 30 minutes (maybe longer) and see if it continues.

Sorry for the delay ....medical crap ...
Boot into the bios and see what is reported as to the ram ...then reset the bios to default .....(I'll be in and out ...hang in there ...and yes, it could be that the board is going).

  45. DKO

    DKO Private E-2

no worries i appreciate the help....
    Base memory-640k
    extended memory-490496k
    total-491520k

i hope thats what you wanted i dont see anything else (new stick is 512mb)

also i dont see where to make bios default

  46. TimW

TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

Should be an f number to hit to restore to default ....the memory reported is your hard drive ....what is the motherboard?

  47. DKO

    DKO Private E-2

 sorry about this......ok i have fail safe defaults(which does nothing) and optimized defaults) and now that i cant even boot my old drive i cant see what the board is or see the ram. I am pretty sure the board is an MSI pro 266:confused:
I am going to work soon so I may not get your response till later.

    Thanx Again Tim.

    Darren.
