Windows xp Pro x64 -- having lots of problems

Hi.. I use Windows xp pro x64 as my operating system and am having a lot of problems. I just got a new system a few days ago. A friend put together a build list and i bought the parts on newegg. I don't know how to build them myself so a different friend put it together.

First..my specs:

AMD Phenom 9950 Quad core black edition
8 gigs of omz Reaper 1066 ddr2
Asus Motherboard m3a78-t
Asus chipset ATI Radeon 4870 x2 2 gig video card
150gig Raptor 10k rpm
1.5 TB Seagate 7200rpm

1) My dvd players/burners didn't come with software and I can't make it play dvds no matter what dvd software I've tried. Either it freezes or shows error message. Cyberlink PowerDVD is the last one I tried. Can't play dvds on windows media player or realplayer either.

2) game Jade Empire crashes saying my version of directx isn't right,even though I have 9.0c latest version. Older games like Everquest and City of Heroes are working.

This system should be able to handle just about anything but it seems there is a lot of programs that don't support 64 bit. The online netflix player won't play and connecting my digital camera to upload photos is no longer plug and play.

I would really appreciate some help.

If this is a fresh install of windows, I would say that the programs you are trying to use are 32-bit programs that do not work well on 64-bit systems.

To play dvd's, try vlcplayer,
www.videolan.org/vlc
it will play almost anything. As for Jade Empire, I don't know what to tell you. You could buy 32-bit Windows and have a dual-boot system, or you can install Ubuntu and dual boot into that. Then in Ubuntu, you can try running the game with Wine or subscribing to Cedega.
