    Hi

My father-in-law's computer wouldn't download Service Pack 2 and he didn't know why. It since transpires that the Windows XP which came installed on his laptop uses a "volume" product key, which means that Microsoft won't allow the download. I've checked the underside of the laptop and there's no product key sticker which suggest's what Microsoft are saying is right.

However, my mum has just also bought her own laptop and this has genuine Windows XP on it. Would a solution be to transfer this version of Windows onto the other laptop and if so, how can I do it? (again, it came pre-installed onto the laptop so there's no disc or anything).

If anyone has any alternatyive solutions which don't involve paying out for another Windows package, please advise.

    Thanks.

sorry, in order to do that legally, you would have to uninstall the os from your mom's comp, then install the os to your father-in-laws comp. of course this would only work if you had a ms (microsoft disk), or a restoration disk of the same manufacturer (ie - hp, dell, gateway), as it might say it's not that type of comp. in order to keep everything legit (which are the only answers your going to get here), is to buy xp, and/or purchase a key from microsoft. i believe it's $99.99 for xp home, and $149.99 thru microsoft. i posted a link below. the cheapest i've seen is about $80, for a no retail box. i bought xp thru pricegrabber.com, however you are buying from a company/individual. if you decide to go this route, make sure you check out the sellers ratings, and reviews (at the far right).

ps - when i got my software, i installed it and wound up having to call microsoft, however it was no biggie, they just asked me a few questions (where i bought it etc), and said the software was legit. g/l - sos

edit - if you were to purchase the license key thru microsoft, you'll know it's legit. i'm just not sure if it costs more for them to mail you the software disk?
