Windows XP Setup cannot run under Safemode

Hello All,
Please HELP if possible.
After doing XP Pro Repair. Getting message window, Windows XP Setup cannot run under Safemode. Setup will restart now. There is a OK button. When OK is clicks get Windows starting setup message.This started with pmnnk.exe virus. Tried several methods posted on threads to get correct problem. Don't have back up data so trying to save it if possibles ( PIC's and other files). Have purchased back external drive bit a little to late.
I shot my self in foot several times but starting Repair in Safemode was not smart.

After performing C:\WINDOWS>bootcfg /list received the following.
Total entries in boot list :1
[1] 'Microsoft Windows XP Professional"
OS Load Options: /fastdetect /noexecute=optin /safeboot:minimal
OS Location: C:\Windows

C:\Windows>

There are no prompts per the procedure......

It has been a long day trying to get this fixed. I should have padi more attention. Once I followed the instructions I type exit and machine rebooted. I had the XP CD still in the drive and it appeared that XP was doing a complete new install and not a repair. Current screen show Setup will complete in 39 minutes. Three of the 5 radio buttons are green the last one stating Preparing installation. With Installing Windows in ornage letters. Pulled the CD from drive hopefully stop lost of existing data. Have screen requesting XP CD be inserted in drive.

The CD was in. i Then noticed it came up with the screen that looked like a new installed which is when I ejected the CD. It has been awhile since I've done a repair. When I saw the 39 minutes it didn't seem like a repair so I did a cancel and got error message install did not complete because device was not ready. I power it down.

Not sure. Wish i new that was part of he Windows Repair. Going to a friends house. He has a desktop we can use to check to see if I lost my data. Sure hope not but the screen looked like a new install.
If someone knows if a repair will present it self similar to a install please let me know.

Well thanks for all the input. When I powered the PC back up it completed the Repair Installation of XP with data in tack. Thanks for the guidance and assistance. Now I'm back to the original problem ( Spyware and Viruses). Ihave not allowed access to the internet. Had SuperAntiSpyware and updates on flash drive and loaded to the machine. Currently running SuperAntiSpyware and so for it has found 6 instances for Trojan Winfixer. One memory Item, 4 Registry Items and 2 File Items. I still think pmnnk.exe and dll or there. Should I start a new post under Malware.
Again Thanks everyone for all theHELP...Now if I can get rid of this stinking virus stuff. Based on the forums the Aventure is not over yet.
