Sorry if this has been addressed before, but I'm new to this thread and this problem is new to my desktop. HP system running Windows XP (about 5 years old, I think) Recently this problem started: After logging on as a user, the system says "logging in to Windows", shows the desktop for about 1 sec., then goes to "logging off".
Can't start in safe-mode. same result. A much older response to this problem suggested that the win.ini file was corrupt. Suggested copying this file to wasadaptor.exd and rebooting. No help. Tried the restore point, no help.
Any suggestions? I have a copy of Windows 7 to load over the old sw, but I'm afraid of losing all my data on the hard drive. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Do you have any other way of booting, such as your XP disk or a Linux CD?

Have you kept up to date on Windows updates? There used to be a problem with a log file getting full, but an update fixed that some time ago.

I think you have the file wrong.

    Try this:
    Boot using your winxp cd.
    Enter recovery console.
at the command prompt go to
    C:/windows/system32
    next type:
    Dir *.exe

    If you find, it, type
    copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe

Exit and reboot normally. You should now be able to logon.
    Run regedit
    Navigate to
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\

In the right pane, you should see
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\wsaupdater.exe,
Change it so that it reads:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\userinit.exe
    That should solve the problem.

If you do not have a windows disk, go here instead.
    http://saveme.danfischbach.com/
and click on the Start here.
It is a long process and you have to click answers along the way but Dan explains how to burn a SaveMe CD. (Even though Vista is mentioned, this works for XP).
Read through it and see if you are able to download everything required and have a computer available to burn an ISO.

If you have questions, post them.
