immediately after I log in,windows logs back out... I have read other threads similar to mine that explain renaming wasupdater.exe to something else would allow you to log into windows. So I have armed myself with my XP CD and my boot disks, also I have changed the boot order in BIOS to floppy,cd-rom,and USB-floppy(in that order). At this point my mouse has a light on and my keyboard works. I exit Bios saving the changes and i get the screen with the option to start in safe mode and its at this point that the keyboard and mouse no longer work....any ideas.

My current windows install is fairly new and I would not lose anything important if i had to format the HD but since I have no control of my keyboard I would have to remove it to format it.

    Welcome to Major Geeks.
What happens when your hard drive is first in the boot order?

It takes me to the login screen with no functioning keyboard or mouse.

Is your keyboard and mouse PS2? (round and color coded)May be bad part on motherboard. Do you have access to another keyboard and mouse to check them out?
Might also try a USB type.

I do have spares but not with me. The ones I have now are USB and do work in BIOS.

How soon till you have access to your spares?
    Are they PS2?

Tomorrow evening and they are USB as well...I may also have an adapter if your going to suggest that I try the PS2 type connection.

If you are not concerned about doing a reinstall then try booting from the XP installation disk let it load the temporary files and when you get to the first screen asking what you want to do, check if you have keyboard functionality. You can exit the install anytime but it may be useful to know if your keyboard is recognized by the setup disk if you need to use it later.

Well I tried the PS2 connections and whala ...they work I and was able to do a new install. I also tried sach2 suggestion and no luck but I don't believe the keyboard and mouse failed but maybe the usb ports. Now with the new install the USB ports don't show in the device manager. How can I determine the drivers needed for the USB on my MOBO?

Try going to Device Manager and look for yellow markers. Right click on the item and select Update.

I did check in device manager...only two items missing their drivers and usb wasn't even in the list...until this morning....they magically appeared. Everything is working fine now! I do appreciate the help.

On another note...this is the first time I have posted with a problem, but many times I have been here and found many fixes to previous problems here at this forum...you guys are doing a wonderful thing here and thanks again!
