Windows XP updates make shutdown hang!

    Hello.
    When I go to shutdown, Windows update 1 of 2 keeps appearing. It hangs and the only way to get around it is to keep the power button pressed in for a few seconds. This is not ideal. How can this be remedied? This is a friends laptop. It is about 9 years old and is running SP2.
