[Windows XP] Virus/Malware Issues

    I've been having problems with this netbook for the past month or more now (also 2 other desktops, which I'll run the scans on and post in separate threads later), probably due to the same file(s) being passed on from one to another in attempts to fix them). Basically, if my memory serves me correctly, it began when switching from AVG Internet Security to Avast.. not really sure what happened but it resulted in many problems. The internet at times would simply not work, a phase of un-installing/installing/reinstalling recommended software sich as Avast, Malware Bytes and SuperAntiSoftware. I currently have no protection, as last time I installed Avast it killed my internet. Another bug I've noticed, when trying to place the Quick Lunch toolbar I receive a message saying "Cannot create toolbar"

    EDIT: Also, the way the files are being transferred/shared etc. is via an external hard drive, which is used constantly to backup all the PCs, I believe this also has malware/viruses on it but I do not know how to remove it as having tried using various programs results in being told that it can't access it or something-er-other..

    Requested Logs attached:

    Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Log
    Combofix.txt
    RRLog
    MGLogs.zip

    Unable to locate SASlog.txt though I DID run it as requested... :S

    Speaking of which I would like to see a log from SUPERantispyware. :)
    Does this make a difference? Elaborate on exactly what you mean.

    Please download and save the below to your Desktop or anywhere else you can find it ( if the Desktop is not showing )

    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/grinler/unhide.exe

    Now run it. Did that help?

    For the external Hard Drive and a USB stick.

    Insert your flash drive before we begin. Hold down the Shift key when inserting the flash drive until Windows detects it to bypass the autorun feature. This will keep the autorun.inf from executing automatically.

    Please have all your removable storage devices ready for disinfection.

    Download Flash Disinfector by sUBs and save it to your desktop.

    • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it.
    • Your desktop and icons may disappear. This is normal.
    • It will do a cleanup of removable storage devices, and write a protected Autorun.inf file to help prevent re-infection.
    • Follow any prompts that may appear.
    • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
    • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
    • There will be no GUI interface or log file produced.
    • Reboot your computer when done.

    Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder. It will help protect your drives from future infection.

    I want you to run TDSSKiller so refer to the below for how to do so.

    TDSSkiller - How to run Please attach the log. Also from SAS.

    Sorry, as in when you right-click on the blue of start menu bar > Toolbars, yeah. All the toolbars work except for quick launch, which when I click to run I get a message saying "Cannot create toolbar".

    Nope. And it is on some inconvenience as I use Quick Lunch a lot.

    SAS did not provide a log, only the message "Scanning is complete. No harmful software was detected."
    However in the past this has not been the case as I have ran the program before and it has detected and removed items, though this a few weeks prior to coming to this forum for assistance. I'm unsure if the logs for this are still wandering around my hard drive or not as I uninstalled the program running it the first time.

    Done & attached.

    The log from SUPERantispyware is here, please attach it.

    • C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\SUPERAntiSpyware.com\SUPERAntiSpyware\Logs\SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log - 06-20-2011 - 21-59-26.log
    Try this.

    Cannot create toolbar in Windows XP

    • Messenger Plus! 5 <--- Uninstall this garbage which WILL invite in nasties including LOP infections ;)
    • Java(TM) 6 Update 25 <--- Outdated, uninstall.

    Now we need to use ComboFix (where we can also be rid of some avast remnants too)
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    avast! Firewall
    SecCenter::
    {8decf618-9569-4340-b34a-d78d28969b66}
    DirLook::
    c:\program files\iResearchPanel
    Folder::
    C:\Program Files\AVAST Software
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVAST Software
    File::
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\aswFW.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\aswNdis2.sys
    c:\windows\system32\ConduitEngine.tmp
    Registry::
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{afdbddaa-5d3f-42ee-b79c-185a7020515b}]
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{0A5D2358-A573-4746-8B59-4A2829FB9C74}]

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

    Reboot
    your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

    Done & done.
    Although currently downloading the Java update, which is painfully slow.. the internet startup isn't too flash either. I'm cautious of the fact it currently has no protection also, considering what happened last time with Avast :L
    Also, the "Cannot create toolbar in Windows XP" didn't work either :S

    Try this for your quick launch. If nothing there works I suggest that you post in the software forum.

    "Cannot create Toolbar" error when you enable Quick Launch

    Couple leftover avast! services to deal with.

    Open notepad and copy and paste the following text in the quote box into the window:

    Save this as fix.bat
    Choose to save as "all files".
    Doubleclick fix.bat and let the program run.
    A small black dos window will flash, this is normal.

    c:\program files\iResearchPanel <--- What's inside this folder?

    No luck, but thanks anyway, I shall do so later. :)

    Whatever it was, there is only an 'Uninstall.exe' file left there.

    Also, would you recommend reinstalling Avast (I'll re-download it), if not what free virus/spyware etc programs would you recommend? :)

    You can delete the folder then.

    Yes you can reinstall avast, I use it myself and am happy with it. :)

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
      related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
