Windows Xp wont connect to the network?

I've just installed Xp onto a computer I've used for about a year now, installed both service pack 1 and 2 (From installation files downloaded on another computer.). Everything is working just fine, except I can't connect to the network?

The lights around my network port are flashing - Indicating there is something going on, yet Xp just doesn't detect it, I tried to do a ipconfig/all in the CMD and all it came back with is Windows IP Configuration. Odd?

I've tried unplugging the network cable, restarting both computer and modem and then replugging the cable to no avail.

Any ideas are most appreciated.

 

Have you installed the correct drivers for the card?

If ipconfig doesn't show the connection at all then Windows isn't seeing the device. Look in the Device Manager to see if it's loaded properly. If it's not even listed in the Device Manager and it's an onboard controller, look in the computer bios to see if the controller is enabled. If it's an add on card, make sure it's properly seated.

The lights on most controllers will show signs of a connection even if the controller isn't loaded because most of the controllers in use today have a feature called "Wake On Lan" or WOL which will allow another computer to send a signal through the switch or hub to turn the computer on when it's off or wake it from sleep mode or hibernation.
