before i upgraded to xp i had 98 and i had a microsoft intellipoint wheelmouse optical installed and it was fine, i ran the xp software compat and it said intellipoint might not run in xp, so i figured ok ill just have to reinstall it, so i upgraded then uninstalled intellipoint. now when i boot up my cpu the regular mouse doesnt work somtimes unless i unplug it then plug back in and even somtimes that doesnt work. so i reinstalled intellipoint assuming it would update the drivers or somthing but the same thing is happening. any recommendation??

Got the mouse connected by a PS/2 or a USB port?

im assuming that ps/2 is the mouse port in the back of the cpu:
my intellipoint mouse has a usb plug and it came with a ps/2 adapter for it, and its pluged into the ps/2 port

I'm confused, possibly. You got a NEW regular (not optical) mouse, and that's what doesn't work?
Did you get a new copy of the latest Intellipoint AFTER you upgraded to XP, or are you reinstalling the OLD Intellipoint that you had running with 98 (the one that the compat said might not run)?
Which mouse, and which Intellipoint is installed/in use now?

There have been a bunch of VERSIONS of Intellipoint, and ones that were written for 98 won't work on XP.
In order to use Intellipoint (any version), you must use a Microsoft mouse.
You can get new Intellipoint drivers FOR XP for a Microsoft mouse HERE
If you don't have a MS mouse, UNinstall Intellipoint, then shut down the computer, then restart the computer WITH THE MOUSE CONNECTED ALREADY, and Windows XP will recognize the mouse and install the proper software to run it for you.
If it's a multi-button mouse and NOT MICROSOFT, then you'll have to have the software that came with the mouse (or get it from the mouse manufacturer) in order to program the buttons. The basix XP mouse drivers will only make the wheel and the two main buttons work the standard way.

Do you use intellipoint software to program the buttons or just have them as default?

To be honest and I have an Intellipoint Optical USB rodent and I don't bother installing the MS software as XP picks up the mouse without them...... just plug the USB mouse end in and "Its alive I tell you!" :)

as Wisewiz said from the migration to XP you will need to be carefull to make sure any drivers you download are for XP only and not 98 as its a compleatly different beast!

i had installed intellipoint becuase it came with my microsoft wheelmouse optical. but im not sure im explaining my problem right. when i restart my cpu and it boots up, its like there is no mouse there at all even though its pluged in. when i unplug it and plug it back in, somtimes it will work and somtimes it wont. this happens no matter what mouse im using or if its plugged into the ps/2 or usb. i tried d/ling the latest version of intellipoint for xp and the same thing still happens

    Well...

Don't kill me for skimming, in case someone already said this, but what screwed you up is uninstalling the Intellipoint software AFTER you upgraded.

We get calls like this all day long. It doesn't turn out as a happy story most times.

Just goes to show you clean installs are best.

What value do you have for upperfilter, and do you have a lowerfilter?

(Thanks for coming in on this one, Adryn!)

Minus, NEVER unplug or replug your mouse to the PS/2 port while the machine is ON. I can't imagine where you got the idea that you could hot-switch on a PS/2 connection.

where it says upperfilters, in the data column it says "mouclass", but i dont see anything that says lowerfilters

Minus, are you SURE you have this sometimes problem no matter what mouse you have attached when the machine boots?

If not, the next step is kinda obvious. Borrow a good ordinary mouse from a friend, plug it into your (OFF!) computer, boot and wait for Windows to notice and adjust, then see whether you have the same problem with the mouse when you reboot three or four times in a few hours. If NOT, toss YOUR mouse that came with the comp into the trash bucket, buy a new one, and give your friend his mouse back with a thankyou beer or Coke.

If you have the same problem with the borrowed mouse, then I think maybe you have to get a shop to check the connection on the PS/2 mouse port. If it's loosely connected, it can short on and off with different boots.

EDIT: and with you changing mice with the computer running, a short in that connection is a HIGH possibility!

Aslo if youget to borrow a friends mouse, enter Device Manager and delete the reference to "mouse and other pointing devices" turn off PC unplug mouse > plug new or borrowed one in and re-boot and let XP find the new hardware devices again.
