I am trying to take an old PC and run XP on it because of old software and games I wish to run that won't run on Windows 10 and won't run well on Windows 7. I have downloaded the XP SP 3 provided on this site. Is there a way to make it a boot disk? This may be a simple question for more advanced folks, but I am at a loss.

SP3 .. sounds like it is not an XP install, just the service pack. You need an XP install iso, then burn it to disk or make a bootable USB.

Ok that makes sense. I tried to install a version of XP I had, but I can't get drivers to install or anything so I don't know what is going on.

It is a Dell Optiplex 9010, I have XP 32 bit Pro installed on it.

So why are you wanting to reinstall XP?

I can't get any of my drivers to work and I keep getting win32 errors. I thought maybe something was corrupted with this XP. I don't know. I am grasping at straws. I am not a PC guru.

Thanks for all the input. Mekanik, thanks. I downloaded that ISO. I will probably try it in a few days. plodr, I have a dell service tag so I know which drivers I need. I got them from the dell site, but every single one I try to install (regardless of order, or even in the proper order) gives me a win 32 error.

It's been so long since I did anything on an XP computer and because it is old, searching doesn't give good results.

What is the exact win 32 error? Something like this is not a 32 bit application?

    All I found was this

    Dell will not publish instructions.

Eldon, I have tried all of that already, no dice.

Mekanik, I installed that XP. Seems to run better, but I am still getting the WIN32 errors and it wouldn't accept my product key.

Yeah, whatever I try from the Dell Drivers that are in EXE format all says "not a valid win32 application." I can install games, but they won't run, which I assume is because I don't have the proper video drivers installed.

The reasons for getting not a valid 32 bit application are:
    1. file is corrupt, bad or missing
    2. file is not designed for your version of Windows
    3. file is a virus, worm or other malware

I think we can rule out item 3. Does the Windows key you have correspond to what is installed on the computer? If the key is not accepted, that could be the reason.

Also, I suspect your downloads are corrupt. The browser included in XP is IE. The highest version that XP accepted was v 8. The only version of IE that works currently is IE 11 and support for that will drop soon.

You need someone using a newer computer with Windows 7, 8.1 or 10 to download the drivers you need and put them on a USB stick. Try to install the drivers that are on the USB stick.

A guy at a local PC shop was able to find some drivers... where and how I don't know but it's working now, other than the WinXP expiration. I suppose my code doesn't correspond with the version mekanic posted.
