Do I have to format my disk with Windows 2000 before I install Windows XP or will my XP disk do it for me when I place it in my CD writer?

you may do it using only WinXP CD. But if you just install new Windows over Win2000 old system files will stay on your system partition. However you may use WinXP CD to format your C:/ (boot) partition previously and you will obtain new clear XP system after installation.
