Most likely, the problem is damaged files. Here is the Microsoft link for dealing with damaged files. You will need your WIndows install disc to repair them.

If he is able to borrow a disc, he can do repairs without violating any MS policies.
I found this link to a free download that claims to be able to do the same thing, but I know nothing about the company. You could try this link. The claims are that it will fix damaged files. I would post a thread about the software to see if any one has used it, if it works, and if it is malware free, BEFORE downloading it and using it.

Stop Error ........ED is usually associated with hardware.

Remove power cable, open up and make sure the data cable to the hard drive is pushed home firmly at all connectors.

Download the manufacturers' drive test utility. Many can be run from floppy without windows.

If you still have problems post again with details of the system and details of any new programs/updates or hardware added letely.

    Error Message = "STOP 0x000000ED UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME"
Causes = This behavior can occur if either of the following conditions is true:
*Your computer uses an Ultra Direct Memory Access (UDMA) hard disk controller, and the following conditions are true:
    * You use a standard 40-wire connector cable to connect the UDMA drive to the controller instead of the required 80-wire, 40-pin cable.
    * The basic input/output system (BIOS) settings are configured to force the faster UDMA modes.
*The file system is damaged and cannot be mounted.

You should be able to check the integrity of your hard drive through the systems BIOS, no need to boot windows for that. There are ways to make your own Windows CD if you don't have one, (or clone an existing one), if it ever gets misplaced, lost, or you didn't receive one (save yourself the trouble and don't buy a computer w/o one).but it is difficult if you have an upgrade instead of a full install (i386). Please use a backup utility, even if it is ntbackup.exe, and backup your operating system to an external location, even some flash/thumb drives have the capacity to do that. We have XP SP2 Home , and XP SP2 Pro installation disks. If you have a backup of your XP Home with SP2 or XP Pro with SP2 operating system, I can use my disks to get you your OS back, even if your hard drive fails, using our install disk, and your backup, totally legitimate.
