My computer has very recently slowed down to a snail's pace and I am trying to find out why.

I have XP, a cable Internet connection and have the newest Norton installed and run it on a regular basis.

I opened the windows task manager and, with nothing else open or running, I see windriv.exe at 99 and the CPU usage at 100% when the windriv.exe line shows 99. It will go from 99 back to 0 and then back to 99 over and over.

I did a search on this site and have followed the two suggestions; from RUN I opened msconfig and looked for windriv.exe - its not listed. I also ran Ad-aware using the settings suggested... nothing.

I guess I would like to know if this windriv.exe IS a virus or worm and if it is how do I remove it? I have an appointment with someone from Geek Squad to come and perform their $250.00 diagnostic service to try and get the speed back but if I can try and fix this issue myself, I will.

Thank you to anyone who has any ideas on this and being new to this forum, I hope I am posting to the correct area. Forgive me if I'm not.

Yes, we can get this issue resolved. That is insane to pay someone that much to do anything with a computer. All we ask if you follow the below steps and we will address what is left over after these steps.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gifAfter doing ALL of the above and you still have a problem, make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below thread to properly use HijackThis and attach the log:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis
    • Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around..
http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gifWhen you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
    • CounterSpy
    • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
    • Bitdefender - from step 6
    • Panda Scan - from step 6
    • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
    • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
    • HijackThis
NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!
