wingding craziness $@!&

My friend has a HUGE issue with his computer and Im trying to help him but I can not run anything having to do with spyware or anti-virus removal. that includes combofix and MGtools. AVG spybot S&D and nortons all say its clean

Also everything on the desktop and all menus are in a text that looks similar to wingdings. A system recovery yielded no results to remedy this. IE web pages are readable but not the IE menus or address bar. Firefox seems to work fine and is completely readable.

So how can I get help with a computer that I can't run any of the recomended tools on to produce log files and also has all spyware removal and anti-virus removal software saying there is nothing wrong?

Please help, im stumped

id gladly goto regional settings for ya but I cant read a darned thing to know what im clicking on. As I said everyhting is written in somethign that looks like wingdings but isn't wingdings. the only thing that is readable is the internet when using firefox and most things when using IE but only for web pages in IE none of IE's menus or tool bars are readable. everything in firefox seems to work fine and is readable. The owner of the comp is tired of waiting and just wants to do a repair even though i told him the problem will still be ther waiting to happen again without either fixing it it formatting his drive... he doesnt want to format. to re-interate all icons on the desktop have description in something that looks like wingdings and all menus and tool bars are the same type of symbols. if I had another computer to compare to maybe i could know what i was clicking on because the icon images are still showing properly.

Just a guess but even if i did find the regionl settings it would just show everything in the wingdings like script and I coldn't tell you anything anyways.

I have a potential reghack fix saved to a .reg file, but it is untested.

After getting this email I called my buddy with the problem and learned he had formatted his hard drive because he was sick of waiting for an answer. impatient people suck for the learning curve. Hopefully the problem doesnt bother him again. Myself Id of rather known how to fix it so I wouldn't need to ask again incase I see it in another friends computer...
