WinME and Windows Media Player

I'm working on a crusty old Gateway that was recently 'upgraded' from W95 to WMe (formatted the drive, installed all the drivers). The owner installed a used CD burner. It burns fine, both data and audio. But the audio wouldn't play (see screen shot). So I swapped out CD burners, and got the same error. I tried using 3 other media players; I got varying errors, but none played the audio (Media Player Classic said 'can't render file'). I swapped out the CD burner again with a brand new DVD/CDRW combo; still the same error. I tried the audio CDs burned on the old Gateway in other PCs and home stereos and they played fine. So I updated DX to 9c; made no difference. I tried installing a codec pack, KLite standard wouldn't install on ME so I went to FileHippo and got an older one that's ME compliant. It locked up on the last stage of "registering files". I thought maybe the PC is old and slow so I waited; 30 minutes later it still said "registering files" so I ended it via the task manager. Now I can't uninstall KLite. I was thinking about trying a different codec pack, but I think I'll wait on that. So, Any ideas???

(the colors in the screen shot are whacked because I had to save in a low color BMP to get it small enough to attach :( )

ME has a restore feature like XP. Restore to an earlier time.

Also the error shows digital and analog.
Right click the optical drive, select properties and then the properties tab and be sure Enale digital CD audio for this device is unchecked. Maybe the error will go away.

No can do.... as I stated in the first post:
This was done maybe 2 days ago. The playback of audio CDs was not tested at the time of the new WinME install; all we tested was if the CDRW could burn and read data; it can and it works fine. It won't play back any audio CDs, even commercial store-bought CDs produce the same error I attached above. This has happened with 3 different optical drives so I know the drive is not the culprit.

This post might be worth a try. If you do use it rename the files before replacing them so you can change them back if it doesn't help.

The ASPI page is available at The way back machine

That was the exact same problem I was having, but this post came in a bit late... thanks anyway. I'll remember this in case I have the same problem again. The owner of the PC provided a Win2000 disc and product key, so we formatted again and installed it with SP4, DX9c, and the newest drivers I could find (which weren't that new, from 2004). So far, everything is working perfectly.
