    hey.
i have windows 2000 with service pack 4 installed. when i was gaming with a buddy of mine last weekend, we noticed that he was only able to copy files located at my c: drive and not from e: or f:, he could see the folders on e or f, but not open them etc. what changes did sp4 make to my windows since i can't share anything unless it's on drive c?

can anyone please tell me what i have to do to be able to share all my drives?

i have tried formating my drive an reinstalling win 2000... you see; it works just fine with sp3... but it fu*ks up when i install the sp4..
yeah i posted this in the networking section on the forum too.. no answers.. :(

EDIT: sorry.. i messed up on the title..:p

Win 2000 works with NTFS File system and in order to share files within Windows 2000, You must give both standard permissions and NTFS permissions or it will not work

Note: With all Windows OS's from 2000 onward, C: is automatcally shared for RAS purposes

All you have to do is right click on the folder you wish to share and go to properties. Then add a share like normal but also click on a button on the right hand side that says permissions and give everyone full control. That should fix the problem.

Any other hastles let me know.

    Hello, l0ck0n!

Are your E:, F: drives NTFS partitions and C: drive FAT partition?

The thing is that NTFS requires additional permissions. You need to go also to Rt click menu -> Security tab -> Add user "Guest" or somebody else with proper permissions.

i give everyone full control... but no effect..
when i try to open my shared folder D:\downloads on my brothers computer i get permission denied. If i try to open my shared C:\download it all works just fine.

as i said before something in windows messes up when i install the sp4. because this problem is not there in sp3. this is really starting to piss me off, i really want to keep using windows 2000 because i hate windows xp (don't ask why.. :p ) but if this problem can't be solved i see no other solution than to install xp (damnit!)

    wee! problem solved!
    ah! thank you cr.Gena! :)

if anyone stumbles upon the same problem as i had here's what u need to do:
    *Open up My Computer
*right click the partition that you cannot share and choose "Properties"
    *Click on the "Security"-tab
*Click on "add user" or is it just "add"? (i'm usin norwegian win 2000 :p )
*Find and add the User "Guest" on the list
*Change the preferences for the Guest user if you like
    *Press OK
now you can share any folder on that partiton :)

Damnit! so much trouble for so little.. hehe well this is the only thing i did not think of. so thanks again cr.Gena :) you don't know how much frustration this problem has caused.. :p
