    Hey guys,

    MSE recently detected a WinNT/ramnit.gen!A trojan. MSE has tried to remove it but it does not seem to be going away. I also did a scan with super anti-spyware but it didn't pick up anything. I also tried doing a scan with malwarebytes but it seems to be blocked.

    I did some googling and it seems that the best course of action is to reformat my laptop.However I don't have my installation cds with me so I wanted to see if there was anything else I could do.

    Thanks so much for helping me out!

    Alright I managed to get Malwarebytes chameleon running. It detects the trojan but it doesn't remove it. I have attached teh scan logs from ESET, Malwarebytes and MSE.

    If I do reformat my laptop, will I also need to reformat my external hard drive that is connected to it? I download most of my stuff direct to my EHD so I'm pretty sure thats the source of the trojan.

    Thanks a lot!

    Thank you so much for taking your time to help me.

    Alright, so I followed the steps uninstalled all my current antivirus software and followed those steps again. I am using the 64-bit version of windows 7 so I didn't run RootRepeal.

    Strangely, this time round SUPER antispyware and malwarebytes didn't pick up anything. Also, these programs seems to only scan my C: drive and not my external hard drive which I suspect I the root of the problem. Would that affect the results at all?

    OK, I have not time to go through the logs properly yet, but it's not looking too bad from what I can see. So when I return from work later tonight, I shall go through thrm with a fine toothcomb and see what's what. :)

    Java(TM) 6 Update 29 <--- Uninstall outdated Java.

    Now we need to use ComboFix by sUBs

    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    DirLook::
    c:\users\Asus\AppData\Local\CRE
    Firefox::
    FF - ProfilePath - c:\users\Asus\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\7zwrldun.default\
    uStart Page = hxxp://start.facemoods.com/?a=ddrnw
    FF - prefs.js: keyword.URL - hxxp://search.conduit.com/ResultsExt.aspx?ctid=CT3072253&SearchSource=2&q=
    Folder::
    c:\users\Asus\AppData\Local\cbdwtjmx
    c:\program files (x86)\Conduit
    c:\users\Asus\AppData\Local\Conduit
    File::
    C:\Users\Asus\AppData\Local\hixatihh.log
    C:\Users\Asus\AppData\Local\liubflbn.log
    C:\Users\Asus\AppData\Local\nnjkrlty.log
    C:\Users\Asus\AppData\Roaming\room_v3.dat
    Registry::
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchScopes\{0D7562AE-8EF6-416d-A838-AB665251703A}]
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

    Reboot your machine and install the most current and up to date version of Java available here at the below link:

    Java Runtime 6

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista or Windows7) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

    Run The ESET online scan again and see if it finds anything! Let me know.

    Ok I did everything in you instructed and these are the new logs.

    My browsers are not disabled anymore. However, eset still seems to be detecting it...

    Yes, but only what is inside of Combofix's quarantine. That is good news. Nothing is being found on your system. I'm just gonna check the logs over to confirm this...

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    Everything looks good, are you ready for final steps? :)

    Ok, just got that done.

    Ever ready, my friend! :)

    Glad to hear it. :)

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
      related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Thank you so much for helping me out. You're a lifesaver! :)

    How can I be sure that it is gone from my system?

    Also, is it possible that the cause of the malware is still on my computer (in external hard drive)?

    Thanks again!!

    Have your external plugged in and run an online ESET scan.

    Some good news and bad news..

    ESET is no longer detecting Ramnit, can I safely assume that it is gone for good?

    However, it just picked this up: BAT/HostsChanger.A application. :(
    Is this something serious?

    It's a keygen so just get rid of it if eset hasn't already killed it.

    Alright, problem solved!

    Again I gotta show my gratitude. I cannot thank you enough for your generous aid.

    I'll start taking better care of my computer from now on!
