    Hello,
I'm a little more computer litterate then most of my friends, so I help them when they have problems. I've been here before with a problem, over a year ago. Since then the "Read and Run me first" has helped me clean up several other computer problems. Now, however I'm a little past my knowledge base. Rather then foul things up more, I'm posting for some help.
The major problem is no ability to connect to the internet. I'm not sure if this is malware but, I thought this would be a good place to start.
    So to describe the problem/problems......
The computer can not connect to the internet, either wired or wirelessly.
I'm working on the wired connection as that is what my home system is. I have no wireless connectablity but, can go somewhere to test if/when I have to.
I have run a Windows repair/re-install. ( Where you go to install Windows and it allows you to "repair" with a "re-install). No joy.
In "safe-mode with network" I tried to connect and received an error message from the Network diagnostic regarding "Winsock Diagnostic"
    "Winsock Status"
"info = Error attempting to validate the winsock base providers:2
error = Not all base service providers could be found in the winsock catalog. A reset is needed.
info = Redirecting user to support call."
The "Network adapter diagnostic" area is all "Green"
HTTP, HTTPS, FTP Diagnostic is all "Red".
I had already run the entire series of "Read And Run Me First" when I got the above so I tried running "Winsockfix.exe" ....probably shouldn't have but, no joy anyway. At this point having run an internet search on the error message from the Network Diagnostic I am sure I am beyond my level of knowledge. Rather than try to interpret Hijack This or any of the other logs and foul things up more I'm posting the logs in the hopes that things aren't too messed up. BTW, I have ininstalled the drivers for the NIC and re-installed the latest versions. The computer is an HP Pavilion DV4000 Laptop running Windows XP Home Edition.

    Thanks in advance,
    Respectfully,
    Dmin11

On a side note, when the "Control Panel" is in "Catagory" mode, I am unable to access the "Security" section. Clicking on the icon gives me nothing.

Your logs are clean. I suggest you post in the software or networking forum for additional assistance.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore ato create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
