Winsock problems?

I have a Laptop running Windows 2000 with 512MB RAM and a 1.13 GHz processor. I recently ran Spybot S&D and downloaded the new version of LavaSoft SE Personal. It seems like at some point after that my internet access became hit or miss. Sometimes it works, but most of the time it doesn't. I will get the dreaded "page not found" then subsequently a dialog box saying "Internet Explorer could not open the search page". I did some surfing on the net in general and saw some posts saying that I may have some Winsock issues and the Cornell site had a program called WinsockXPFix that I downloaded and ran, but this has not resolved my problem. Spyobot S&D says the system is clean. Would appreciate any advice on where I should go next.

It very well may be a Winsock issue, if Winsok XP Fix didn't repair the problem WInsock2 can be rebuilt manually; but first.

Please follow our standard cleaning procedures. Also there are steps included for installing, running, and posting HijackThis logs as attachments.

• Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support
• Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
• Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

• After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:

• When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too (these scans are covered in steps 6 & 7 of the READ & RUN ME sticky)
  • Bitdefender
  • Panda Scan
  • HijackThis

If you can't get the online scanners to work, because of connectivity issues; skip them.
