I have a 40gig hard drive, 512mg RAM, and am currently using Win98SE. I've done a compatibility check to make sure my pewter would handle it and it's OK. I want to install my upgrade to XP Pro, but am confused if I should do a quick install or new install. Is there really much of a difference between the two? If I do a quick install, can I partition my hard drive and change to NTFS after the installation? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hey xflat, I'll give you all the tips you want if you can walk me through this. Unfortunately, I bought this pewter with Win98SE on it already and don't have any of the origional disks. The only disk I have is an SE upgrade disk.

I did it a little while ago. All I did was reformat using a 98 boot disc and install xp like it was a new computer. Xflat is right by saying upgrading is a disastor. It's more of a pain than reformatting, installing, and replacing your files. Also, upgrading makes it so that you can't use the NT file system.

And it should install fine on your pc, I installed xp over a pc with win98se, 384 mb ram, 800MHz processor, 10 gig hdd, and really bad HDD rates. It should work perfect on yours.

I have no idea how to do that. Can you explain how, step by step? The instructions in the pamphlet don't explain any of this.

i personally prefer to go for a fresh installation but if thats just not feasible because of the upgrade version

you can in XP convert from FAT to NTFS with no loss of data someone please step in and let me know if this is not possible after upgrading to xp
although i cant see why not

and if it is possible and you want to go down this route muskybob and one of us here will gladly take you through it

looking through the thread the burning question here would be is the 98 upgrade disc a qualifying disc if you went with a clean install im inclined to think it is

I copied my IE, ICQ, Incredimail, folders along with My Documents onto a CD. Can these be copied into XP when the installation is done? If so, I'd rather go the clean installation if it's possible. I've been on Black Viper's site & reviewing XP installation.

Maybe, but probably not with a direct copy.

You should use Export/Import if possible (you can with IE at least) since WinXP places things in very different locations than Win98. My Documents moves from "C:\My Documents" to "C:\Documents and Settings\<accountname>\My Documents". Your actualy document files you can obviously copy right over, but I don't know if ICQ or IncrediMail will have a fit or not. The configuration files might point to bad locations (which is why Export/Import is preferred).

I am trying to use the 6 set XP Setup Boot Disks. I get as far as the 4th disk on the setup & get the notice "The file ini910u.sys is corrupted. Press any key to exit setup" I have to exit the setup. Anyone know how to repair this?

Hm. Possibly a corrupt download, or a flawed floppy? did you do a full format on the floppies before making the install set? If you're like me, your floppies have likely been around for a while and been used over & over. A bad sector on a floppy disk is fairly common.

Nope, they were brand new. I'll try reformatting them and try it again.

Worth the time. Rare, but I've seen bad sectors on new disks from time to time (shrug). Full format will block off the bad sectors.

I get stuff like that all the time... those floppy making utils are rarley very reliable. You'll just have to make the floppy again till it works

(bump) Yo, Musky. Have you gotten it to work yet, or still having problems?

Major problems, I formated my drive and XP setup said one of the files was corrupt, so I had to reformat again, reload 98SE and install XP. Everything seems to be OK so far. Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I'm back :p
