Lets say I have a Dell with Windows XP Home and a product key sticker. Lets say my friend buys the Dell and I format the hard drive, and sell him the tower with the blank hard drive. Can I legally remove the product key sticker from the Dell, and use that number to install Windows on a new build? And put the sticker on the new PC?

To counter what the above poster said, absolutely NOT.

OEM licenses are written that the COA and license to use it stay with the PC it was built for/activated on. The license cannot be legally transferred.

Adryn... I knew you'd have the answer to this. I tried to tell a friend of mine that the key sticker MUST stay with the PC he wants to sell, blank hard drive or not, but he thought he could keep it for his new build.... I'll link him to this thread ;)
    Thanks.
