    hello

I just clean installed winXPsp2 and have done all the critical updates plus 3 others.

I thought one of these updates took charge of blocking images opening on OE6 preview panes - and am sure that's what I was seeing, but now I can see them. The tick box in OE Tools is done for blocking them.

I earlier had malware problems but after 3 installs felt it was all sorted. Now this image thing makes me worried it's come back.

    Many thanks in advance

    Hi

Request you to provide more clear information of the problem, if you mean that after installation now you are not able to open attachements, then try

    Open OE
    Click Tools
    Click Options
    Click on the Security TAB
Uncheck the Options " Do Not allow attachements to open that can potentialy be a virus "
    Click Apply
    Click Ok

If this is not the problem, then please specify with more details .

    Thank You

Ok thanks. Didn't explain myself well.

Usually when an email arrives with an attached image (jpg, gif etc) you can see it below (sometimes within) the message in the preview pane.

I can see these fine right now.

But I thought the 'new' idea was for them to be blocked from opening in the preview pane, both with an option in Tools>Options>security "Block images and other external content in html emails". This I have ticked and, looking at one html email, seems to be working, though the 'blocked' jpg image in the message still appears below the message as a jpg.

In the recent spate of critical updates I thought one was to intentionally block all images opening in OE's preview pane (though presumably viewable when clicking), and I thought this is what was happening. But now I can see the images below that email (ie how it used to be).

Which is right? It might just be I'm muddling the metafile image thing with this 'any image' display thing.

Or it might be that problems I had before have carried over despite the clean OS install.

    Thanks in advance

The way it is working is as designed, There is no chance of you carrying the problems in case of a clean install

    OK, thanks for confirming this.

well, maybe not a 100% clean install. My drive has 3 partitions (C - drivers, D programs, E data). Haven't reformatted the E drive at all, but have the D once, and C 3 times (have done 3 installs). Also I copied emails, email address book and firefox bookmarks across to the e drive and copied them back after. So the risk is there, but worth the risk! I'm self-employed, too much to lose!

You can then buy a USB Hardrive, Back Up DATA and then, Remove it, Then Delete all partation in your Orignal Harddrive, Create partations and do a clean Install

Thanks yeah, I can write it to CD as backup but not until I know (really know!) it's clean. Thanks though for the suggestion.

    Three more questions:

1 - 'administrator' role is new to me. I get the basic idea, I think, but as the only user it appears I just log on as usual - no option is given. But I can see in Windows Explorer in Documents and settings most things are set up/happening/logging under "RP" (me) and little under "administrator". Firefox and MailwasherPro, for example, are in RP\Application Data but PCTools is in both though the administrator's folder is empty.

When, why and how should I use the administrator option?

2 - someone will be working in my house soon while I'm not here, and (for my own peace of mind) I'd like to make a login necessary to use the computer. Is there a way to do this?

3 - running HijackThis shows various logfiles running. Looking at the logs suggests something's not running smoothly in the OS. Will do a fresh HJT now and attach in a few minutes

Many thanks in advance for any help.

buying a USB harddrive was a better idea than I gave credit for at the time... thanks and sorry. I did it a couple of days later.
